EastCountySports.com staff report
SAN DIEGO – The Mount Miguel Matadors were toe-to-toe with the Madhouse for a quarter-and-a-half Friday night before succumbing to the section’s second-ranked team, 48-12, at Madison High’s Homecoming.
The Warhawks could only manage just a 6-0 lead over the hardened visitors through one quarter.
Matadors defensive back ERIC GRAHAM intercepted a pass giving his mates the ball in Madison territory with his team still within striking distance of the defending state 2-AA champions.
Madison scored a TD on the opening drive, as quarterback Mario Alves’ threw a 6-yard pass to Treyvone Anderson.
In the second quarter, Alves threw a 66-yard score to Daniel Stokes.
Alves threw a 70-yard TD to Stokes later in the first half, as the Warhawks led 34-0 at the half.
The Matadors scored in the third quarter when SANTINO PACHECO scored a 79-yard touchdown on a pass from quarterback MUGABE MILLER.
Mt. Miguel (2-4) added a last-second score to prove their full-game intent.
Miller and Greene connected on a 21-yard score to be the last team to register on the scoreboard.
The Warhawks and Matadors both put up two touchdowns in the second half.
Mt. Miguel will play at Monte Vista in the Grossmont Valley League opener next Friday.
Madison (5-0), winners of nine-straight, will face Cathedral Catholic at home next week in a matchup between two state championship teams from last season.
Stokes threw a 27-yard scoring strike to Jaden Dir in the third quarter.
Madison rushed for 255 yards, while the Matadors had just 67 yards of total offense in the first half and 233 for the game.
Mount Miguel committed two turnovers and suffered a sack back to the Warhawk 45 on the drive following Graham’s pick.
Miller passed for 143 yards and two touchdowns.
