EL CAJON – The Grossmont College Griffins, coming off their first win of the season last week at home against L.A. Harbor College will travel to face the El Camino College Warriors at Murdock Stadium on Saturday at 6 p.m.
The Griffins outlasted the Seahawks, 40-34, through a wild second half highlighted by a 71-yard touchdown pass from quarterback BRAD CAGLE to receiver LUQ BARCOO that appeared to give Grossmont a successful lead.
With the score tied 34-all with under five minutes left in the game, Grossmont freshman JEROME JOHNSON scored on a 5-yard TD run to regain the lead.
Grossmont’s defensive stand was led by ERNIE GARCIA, out of West Hills High, and CHRIS JAMES.
After two blowout victories to start the season, El Camino College has jumped up the JC Athletic Bureau Poll of California Community College Football Coaches Top-25.
The Warriors are ranked No. 8 in the state and No. 5 in Southern California after outscoring their first two opponents 130-10. The Warriors received 197 total points in the poll, jumping eight spots after being ranked No. 16 in California after week one.
In addition, the Warriors were also ranked No. 8 in this week’s California Community College Sports Information Association poll.
Along with the regional polls, the Warriors also made their debut in the weekly JCGridiron.com Dirty 30 National Rankings, earning a No. 27 slot in the poll.
After starting off the season by setting a new ECC scoring record with a 74-8 victory over L.A. Southwest in week one, the Warriors continued to dominate in week two with a 56-2 romp over Moorpark.
The Raiders only points came on an errant snap on a Warriors punt attempt that sailed out of the end-zone for a touchback. The Warriors defense pitched a shutout as they tallied six takeaways; four interceptions and two fumble recoveries.
Five receivers caught touchdown passes for the Warriors, while quarterback Cole Klayman was 9-for-9 for over 200 yards and three touchdowns to earn National Central Conference Player of the Week honors. Stephon Robinson had four catches, including two for scores, including a 73-yard TD reception.
