SANTEE – Christian’s defense is going to find it hard to make headlines this season ahead of its record-setting pace offense.
But the Patriots’ D slowed the usually show-stopping Santana Sultans Friday night, 48-7, at Community Stadium.
The Patriots go through this stage every year it seems.
Christian starts the season as an underrated contender, but soon find themselves climbing the rankings with the likes of the big school contenders, as they knock off opponent after opponent.
Christian senior quarterback BRAD JEREMIAH kept up his numbers through three games, as he went 27-of-33 for 330 yards and three more scores as part of the most prolific passing offense in the county.
The Patriots scored first on a 24-yard touchdown by JAVIER JIMENEZ on a dump off from the QB, which the back turned into the nifty score.
Christian added its second score on a 28-yard touchdown pass from Jeremiah to JESSE MATTHEWS, who found himself wide open for Jeremiah’s on-target pass, which he hauled in and sprinted the final yards into the end zone.
Matthews had seven catches for 128 yards.
The Patriots’ ALONZO RICHARDSON had an interception to set up another Christian scoring series.
Jeremiah hit Matthews with an 8-yard score to extend the lead to 21-0.
The Sultans got a 3-yard TD dive from senior DALE GENSCHAW to give the hosts some life.
The Pats then finished off the Sultans in the second half thanks in part to two more TDs from Jimenez, this time runs from 1 and 15 yards.
NASHOM CARTER returned a punt for a touchdown from 70 yards out. Carter also had seven receptions for 81 yards.
Jeremiah added a 5-yard touchdown run, as well.
Jimenez had five carries for 73 yards.
Senior JOSH OEDEWALDT, of Santana, was 18-of-32 passing for 187 yards.
BRYCE RIEPL had four tackles, including a sack for the Patriots. Santana was held to just 23 yards on the ground.
