2017 EAST COUNTY PREP FOOTBALL
MOUNT MIGUEL 15, CHULA VISTA 6
SPRING VALLEY – Mount Miguel put up a brick wall of defense on the Chula Vista Spartans, revenging a season-opening loss from last season with a 15-6 home victory Friday night.
Senior running back SHEMAR GREENE had a 60-yard touchdown run in the third quarter for the decisive score.
Senior quarterback MUGABE MILLER threw a 7-yard touchdown slant pass to SANTINO PACHECO in the end zone for a 6-0 lead.
The game was as advertised as hard-hitting from the get-go.
“It was ugly but we needed to win one like this and our defense played lights out football,” Mount Miguel coach SEAN MCDADE said.
Senior Diamanté Wafer had eight tackles just in the first half alone.
“Those two (Pacheco and Wafer) were all over the field making things happen,” McDade said.
Green totaled around 175 yards on the ground.
“Just like last week we shot ourselves in the foot a couple of times,” McDade said. “But not as many mental mistakes as the previous week (in a home loss to Morse).”
One of the Matador miscues were a center snap over the quarterback’s head for a 30-yard loss right after a 30-yard gain.
Mount Miguel added a 30-yard field goal in the fourth quarter with just over four minutes remaining by sophomore MLB ULICES MONJE, after the Matadors’ regular kicker, Greene, was removed from the game just moments earlier for concussion protocol.
Chula Vista tied the game in the first half on a quarterback keeper with :23 second left before intermission.
The Matadors blocked the point-after.
Mount Miguel forced a sack in the first half led by the blitzing pressure from Pacheco, who also had two sacks and a nine tackles.
The Matadors also forced and recovered a fumble and Greene boomed a 60-yard punt in the second quarter.
Mount Miguel recorded a tag-team sack with 17 seconds left in the third quarter.
The Matadors got into scoring position late to try and make it a two-score game. Mount Miguel got to the 11 on a short screen to Pacheco. That was when the series resulted in the near-clinching field goal.
Greene had 156 yards rushing on the night, while Miller threw for 125.
Pacheco had five receptions for 50 yards, while LARRY YZAGUIRRE had three catches for 47 yards.
Wafer had 11 tackles, including seven solo, while JARVIS HEARD had 10 tackles, including nine solo.
