SANTEE – It took them 101 minutes but they did it.
The San Diego Christian women’s soccer team defeated Providence Christian 1-0 in double OT in the season opener.
Freshman SERRA COLLINS, from Chaparral High in Temecula, made a great collegiate debut as her goal in the 101st minute was the difference maker.
The Hawks dominated the first half not letting the Sea Beggars take an official shot.
SDC tallied two but both of them were foiled.
SDC also had issues staying on sides as the Providence Christian defense caught SDC offsides eight times.
Both sides looked to find the game-winner late in the second half as each team tallied two shots apiece with under three minutes left in the game.
VIENNA ROUSSET had the last chance before the end of regulation but her shot was saved with 10 seconds remaining.
Santana High product MACKENZIE ASNICAR’s attempt three minutes into the first OT period was also saved by the Sea Beggars’ keeper. That was the only shot in the first 10 minute period before Collins scored one minute into the second extra frame.
The Hawks held a 9-5 shot advantage.
SANDRA RIVAS and SHELBI HORNER (Steele Canyon) shared the shutout. Horner tallied three saves.
San Diego Christian is back on the field Tuesday against Saint Katherine for a 10 a.m. start time at the Santee Sportsplex.
