LA JOLLA – Mount Miguel exacted its revenge on Foothills Christian with a 12-1 victory in five innings via the mercy rule in the CIF-San Diego Section Division V championship game on Friday evening at UC San Diego.
The Knights beat the Matadors, 6-1, in the semifinals on Thursday afternoon, but Mount Miguel beat Classical Academy of Escondido, 12-5, later in the day to win the loser’s bracket, earn a spot in the finals and get the rematch against Foothills Christian.
Junior STEPHANIE HERRERA’s two-out triple over the center fielder ignited a three-run rally in the top of the first for the Matadors, who rallied for four more runs with two outs in the top of the second and the rout was on.
Herrera went 2 for 4 with a triple and a RBI and she allowed four hits and no earned runs to pick up the victory for Mount Miguel.
YVETTE ANDRADE went 2 for 4 with two runs, JACQELY ESPINOZA went 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBI, JULIETTE HARRIS went 1 for 2 with two walks, two runs and a RBI, NEDDY BARRIOS went 2 for 3 with a run and two RBI and CAMILA ESPINOZA went 2 for 3 with two RBI to lead the Matadors.
“We’re a really good hitting team, so it just comes to us really easy,” Herrera said. “Considering (Mount Miguel) had won it in about 10 years, it feels really great to be doing that for our school.”
Mount Miguel was making its first appearance in the finals since beating Scripps Ranch, 3-1, to win the Division II title in 1997. The Matadors finished the season 12-12.
SUSANA CAREY was a bright spot for the Knights, who were making their first appearance in the CIF-SDS finals, going 2 for 2 with an RBI double. Foothills Christian finished the season 17-6 and 4-4 in league (4th place).
