Griffins advance to Super Regional

EL CAJON – The Grossmont College Griffins are Super Regional-bound after a 13-3 blasting of Irvine Valley College at Noel Mickelsen Field on Saturday.

JUSTEN BURKEY provided the spark with a grand slam to left field in the Griffins’ eight-run fourth and a solo home run to left in the top of the eighth.

The Griffs’ CABOT VAN TIL was 3-for-3 with a two-RBI single in the fourth and three runs scored. Van Til is now hitting an unfathomable .460 in 100 at-bats. He also has driven in 39 runs this season.

NOAH STROHL capped Grossmont’s 3-run third with a two-run single to right center.

TIM HOLDGRAFER went five innings for the Griffins, allowing three hits and striking out three in relief of starter DONAVON MCCRYSTAL.

With the two-game sweep over the 18th-seeded Lasers (19-24), So Cal No. 2 seed Grossmont (23-7-1) advances to the Southern California Super Regionals where it will host 11th-seeded Cypress (29-13), which upset sixth-seeded Santa Barbara 9-0, 6-1.

Grossmont has won six-straight and 16 of its last 17.
