SAN DIEGO (4-19-17) — No. 9 ranked Christian unleashed a multiple hit attack on No. 5 ranked Cathedral Catholic on Tuesday (Apr. 18) in a Western League opener but it took 10 innings for the Patriots to dash the Dons 7-5.
GARRETT NIELSEN led the Patriots’ 13-hit attack with three hits.
Christian (16-3, 1-0 Western League) trailed 5-0 entering the 5th inning when ALONZO RICHARDSON singled up the middle and ETHAN CONTRERAS and JESSE MATTHEWS each singled to load the bases.
BRAD JEREMIAH doubled to score Richardson and Contreras when the defender lost the ball in the sun. Matthews scored on an RBI groundout by AARON PULIDO and GARRETT MAZZA, who was running for Jeremiah, scored on CHASE WEHSENER’s sacrifice fly to tie it at 5-5.
The game would remain tied until the 10th inning before Christian scored on ZACH HOGUIESSON’s single up the middle and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Nielsen walked and JUSTIN LEDGERWOOD singled to score Hogueisson for a final score of 7-5 for Christian.
JAKOB BECK pitched five innings, allowing two hits and one walk to earn the win. Matthews finished the final inning to pick up his 6th save.
The Patriots will again play Cathedral, this time at home on Thursday (Apr. 20) at 3:30.
“We were down five going into the 5th inning and then scored five runs,” noted Patriots assistant coach BRYAN MITCHELL. “They have a really good Cathedral team.
“Nielsen came out really swinging the bat hard today, and Ledgerwood had a big hit. You couldn’t ask for a better performance from Beck today,” he added.
