EL CAJON – Sophomore NOAH STROHL hit a two-run home run in the first inning and hard-working freshman TIM HOLDEGRAFER scattered 10 hits over 7 2/3 innings to pace the SoCal sixth-ranked Grossmont Griffins to a 4-1 Pacific Coast Athletic Conference win over San Diego City College Tuesday afternoon at Noel Mickelsen field.
Grossmont (15-1 PCAC, 20-6-1) remains 1 1/2 games in front of Palomar (12-1) in the PCAC. The Griffins, who have been simply dominating for nearly six weeks now, are currently on a five-game winning streak.
Strohl’s home run – his eighth of the year – scored REECE HERNANDEZ (Santana), who had three hits and scored two runs.
Holdegrafer struck out six and walked none to set the table for HAYDEN SHENEFIELD, who got a look in the closer role, going an inning-and-a-third, allowing no hits and striking out two.
City left eight men on.
TREVOR BEARD drove in a run in the Grossmont eighth for the final margin.
A pair of Steele Canyon grads each had pair of hits for San Diego City (12-12, 7-6 PCAC).
Sophomore Wyatt Logan and freshman Matt Bagdasar led the Knights’ offense.
Freshman Cole Flint, also from Steele Canyon had a hit for SDCC, but Griffins did a good job of retiring the former Cougar with men on base Tuesday afternoon.
San Diego City sophomore right-hander Garrett Yocum (Valhalla) struck out two of the three batters he faced, allowing no runs.
The only bugaboo for the Griffins on this afternoon were the three errors.
The Griffins and Knights continue this week’s three-game set and Thursday at 2 p.m. The series concludes back at Mickelsen Field on Friday, also a 2 o’clock start.
