Griffins sweep Jags to extend unbeaten streak to nine

EL CAJON – Grossmont College sophomore DAVID MALDONADO hit a bases-clearing double as part of a four-run eighth inning to push the Griffins past visiting Southwestern College, 8-5, and sweep this week’s three-game series with the Jaguars.

More significantly, Grossmont improved its nine-game unbeaten string to remain at the top of the Pacific Coach Athletic Conference standings in the early going.

JAVIER DE LA TORRE got the win, throwing two innings, striking out five.

The Jaguars got to De La Torre for a run in the top of the ninth, but it was unearned.

NOAH STROHL doubled in a pair of runs to give the Griffins a 2-0 lead in the third, driving in CABOT VAN TIL and REECE HERNANDEZ (Santana).

Van Til, a sophomore from Patrick Henry, was an instrumental part of the Griffins’ offense, reaching all four trips, including three walks, and scoring three runs.

Maldonado and Hernandez hit back-to-back doubles in the fifth to each drive in a run, as Maldonado picked up the first of his four RBI.

Seven Griffin hurlers took the mound in the back-to-backer against the Jags.

Southwestern freshman Kenny Olhauser, from El Capitan High, drove in a pair of runs to tie the game in the top of the fifth, as the Jaguars took a 4-2 lead and knocked starter ANDREW MITCHEL from the game without recording an out.

Grossmont is 6-0 in the PCAC at 11-5-1 overall.
