ROUNDUP: Season finales provide memories, upsets

Mount Miguel seniors are honored on Senior Night Friday at home.

SANTEE (2-18-17) — Granite Hills steamrolled Santana in the Grossmont Valley League finale 65-45 to notch its first undefeated league season in school history as the Eagles blew past the Sultans on Friday (Feb. 17).

The triggerman for Granite Hills was JORDEN ROGERS with 5 three-pointers, finishing with 20 points, while CAMERON SPITZER hit 4 treys for 16 points.

“This is the first time in school history that we have gone 10-0,” said Eagles coach RANDY ANDERSON. “We also matched the school record for wins in a season with 22.”

“The three seniors – Ryan Kelly, Cameron Spitzer and Jorden Rogers – did really well tonight.

“XSAVIER SMITH had a great game defensively with 7 blocked shots,” Anderson said.

RYAN KELLY rolled a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds.

NICK BERHALTER had 12 points for Santana, while teammate T.C. SIMMONS added 11 and JOHN BOBOF, JR., added 10.

HELIX 58, WEST HILLS 55 – In front of a near-full house Friday night (Feb. 17) on Senior Night in Santee, Helix held off West Hills 58-55 in the final Grossmont Hills League game of the regular season.

CAMERON BARRY scored 27 points including 3 treys and went 8 for 8 from the free throw line to spark the Wolf Pack.

Barry’s pillage of 3-pointers gave him 84 on the season and caused coach JEFF ARMSTRONG to call time out to salute Barry’s 3-point scoring record.

Meanwhile, NATHAN BALL popped in 13 points for the Pack, which came up short down the stretch.

For the second time in two games in league play, West Hills lost to Helix 69-65 and 58-55.

“It was pretty frustrating,” said Wolf Pack assistant coach TIM BARRY. “We were humbled by the outcome.”

Football player JAYLEN ARNOLD piled in 16 points to lead the Highlanders, while 6-foot-9 MILES NORRIS added 11.

AMARI GREEN chucked in 8 points included 3 treys.

Helix:  Jaylen Arnold 16, Miles Norris 11, Jaylen Hinson 9, Amari Green 8, Carson Baker 7, Dillon 5, Maurice Holmes 2.

VALHALLA 58, GROSSMONT 54 – One of the upsets of the season was executed by the Valhalla Norsemen, who rode the power punch of KAI KOMAKI’s 26 points and TY SCHIMKE’s 24 to victory on Friday night (Feb. 17), the final night of regular season play in the Grossmont Hills League.

MALIQUE SHAW rolled a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds for Valhalla.

Valhalla:  Kai Komaki 26 (4 reb, 4 ast), Ty Schimke 24 (2 reb, 4 ast, 3 stl), Malique Shaw 10 (12 reb, 1 ast, 6 blk, 1 stl), Ramzi Sultan (7 reb, 1 ast, 2 blk, 1 stl), Micah Campos (4 reb, 3 ast, 1 blk), Austin Pola (2 reb, 1 stl).

Grossmont:  Not available.

 

MOUNT MIGUEL 64, EL CAPITAN 26 – Mount Miguel hopes to dribble into the playoffs after defeating El Capitan in the final regular season Grossmont Valley League game.

“We’re glad to be in the playoffs (which begin on Wednesday (Feb. 22),” said Matadors coach JAY ROWLETT.

Where the Matadors will be playing will be determined on Saturday and they will play on Wednesday.

In the season finale, DARIAN NORWOOD poured in 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Matadors, while DEVON BROWN tacked on 12 and RICKY HARVEY chipped in 11 as the Matadors finished in second place in the Grossmont Valley League as the Matadors upended El Capitan Friday night (Feb. 17).

El Capitan:  No report.

 

EL CAJON VALLEY 63, MONTE VISTA 57 – “El Cajon finished the season with a victory,” said Braves coach SCOTTY JAMES. “The boys fought hard all year, and I’m very proud of them. Very happy that they got to see the fruit of all their hard work.”

 

FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 68, ORANGE GLEN 60 – Foothills Christian led 39-31 at halftime and went on to the win, which clinched a tie for the title in the Coastal League at 9-1 with La Jolla Country Day.

JAYLEN HANDS finished with 29 points on Senior Night to pace the Knights.

D.J. CARTER-HOLLINGER added 13 points for FCHS, while KALE BALDADO added 11 and JAREN NAFARRETE added 10.

Hands had 14 points at halftime, including six in the first period.

Hands, Baldado, JORDAN VAN OMMERING and BAILEY LINK are the team’s outgoing upperclassmen.
