Sultans turn lights out on Vaqueros

LAKESIDE (2-9-17) — In a game postponed from yesterday due to power outage, the Santana Sultans battled to a 39-30 victory over the host El Capitan Vaqueros on Wednesday (Feb. 8) in a Grossmont Valley League contest.

The Sultans led 20-9 at halftime. Although the Vaqueros made a little 16-10 run in the third quarter they still ended up trailing Santana 30-25 at the end of the quarter.

TC SIMMONS led the Sultans with 11 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals and a block.

Santana: TC Simmons 11 (8 reb, 3 stl, 1 blk), John Bobof 6 (4 reb, 1 ast, 2 stl), Cole Kinkade 6 (3 reb, 2 stl), Ben Hart 6 (1 reb), Brandon Simmons 5 (7 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl), Nick Berhalter 5 (4 reb, 3 ast, 1 blk), Simone Maritano (4 reb, 1 ast, 4 stl).

El Capitan: No report.

FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 70, LA JOLLA COUNTRY DAY 57 – The Knights’ JAYLEN HANDS scored 28 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out five assists, as FCHS turned away La Jolla Country Day.

With the win, Foothills Christian asserted themselves as the team to beat in the Coastal League with four games remaining.

KALE BALDADO had 28 points, 11 rebounds and three rejections for the Knights.

Foothills’ DERRICK HOLLINGER-CARTER had eight points, four rebounds, a block and an assist to go along with his stellar defensive play down the stretch.

Foothills Christian led 50-40 after three periods after leading 37-25 at intermission. Hands finished the first half with 16 points and six rebounds.
