ROUNDUP: Matadors, Eagles still tied atop Valley League

SPRING VALLEY (2-1-17) — Mount Miguel launched 7 three-pointers, and hit 7 of 9 free throws as the Matadors buzzed past Monte Vista 17-7 in the first quarter in Tuesday’s (Jan. 31) Grossmont Valley League contest, finishing with a 76-42 victory over the Monarchs.

DARIAN NORWOOD rolled a double-double for Mount Miguel, knocked down 18 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, dished 2 assists and made 4 steals to pace the Matadors.

JAMES ALLEN pitched in 15 points, 4 assists and 6 steals for the Matadors, while RICKY HARVEY added 13 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 6 steals.

MARQUISE EDWARDS snared 10 rebounds to go along with 8 points, an assist and 2 steals.

The Matadors blew out Monte Vista with a 24-13 run in the third quarter.

DEONDRE McHAYLE and ANDREW CANTY pitched in 14 points apiece but it wasn’t enough to stable a Monte Vista comeback.

“Their man pressure took us out of our zone,” noted Monte Vista coach MIKE TULLY. “We turned over the ball too many times and gave up uncontested chances, which resulted in a lot of missed layups.”

The Matadors remained tied atop the Valley League standings at 4-0, tied with Granite Hills.

GROSSMONT 56, STEELE CANYON 53 – The Grossmont Foothillers, defending champions from a year ago, evened their league mark at 2-2 in the Grossmont Hills League standings Tuesday (Jan. 31) by knocking off Steele Canyon.

“We played a lot harder in the second half,” noted Grossmont coach FRANK FOGGIANO. “We had 6 threes in the second half.”

HUNTER GAINES spun in 3 treys on his way to a game high 13 point finish. He also grabbed 6 rebounds, handed out 2 assists and made one steal.

JAMIE ODOM punched in 11 points, while his brother AUSTIN ODOM added 10 more.

HUNTER MULDER tossed in 8 points and grabbed rebounds.

“We were up 15 at the half,” said Cougars coach DEREK STEPHENS, “then the wheels fell off. Their guys played harder than our guys.”

THOMAS FISHBURNE led Steele Canyon with 15 points, while TYLER SMITH pitched in 10.

Grossmont:  Hunter Gaines 13 (6 reb, 2 ast, 1 stl), Jamie Odom 11 (7 reb, 1 ast, 2 stl), Austin Odom 10 (2 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl), Hunter Mulder 8 (6 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl), Morgan Stidum 7 (2 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl), Desain Crawford 5 (2 reb, 2 ast, 2 stl), Damageae Gant 2 (1 reb).

Steele Canyon:  Thomas Fishburne 15, Tyler Smith 10, Gage Sanders 8, Nick Barns 7, Kobe Sanders 4, Jalen Sayles 4, Landon Schirer 2, De’Angelo Lewis 2, Darrin Spence 1.

 

GRANITE HILLS 67, EL CAPITAN 34 – Granite Hills pounded out a 23-5 first quarter lead in Tuesday’s (Jan. 31) Grossmont Valley League debacle in Lakeside as the Eagles dominated El Capitan with 13 treys.

JORDEN ROGERS collected 20 points and hit 7 of 14 shots while nailing 6 three-pointers for the Eagles.

CAMERON SPITZER came up big with 9 points and 3 treys along with 8 assists.

RYAN KELLY rolled a double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds as the Eagles manhandled the Vaqueros.

The Eagles are tied for first in the Valley League at 4-0 with Mount Miguel.

Granite Hills:  Jorden Rogers 20 (4 reb, 4 ast, 4 stl), Ryan Kelly 16 (14 reb, 1 ast, 2 stl), Cameron Spitzer 9 (1 reb, 8 ast, 1 stl), Austin Ballo 8 (1 reb, 2 stl), Aaron Cobb 6 (1 reb, 2 ast, 1 blk), Cody Cox 4 (4 reb, 2 ast, 2 blk, 1 stl), Moses Smith 2 (13 reb, 1 blk), Atticus Jordan 2 (1 reb), David Coffey (3 reb, 1 blk), Xsavier Smith (1 reb, 1 ast).

El Capitan:  No report.

 

WEST HILLS 56, VALHALLA 51 – This one belonged to the Wolf Pack of West Hills as they slipped past Valhalla on Tuesday (Jan. 31) in a Grossmont Hills League encounter.

CAMERON BARRY paced the Pack with 19 points and MARQUELL COOL also nailed down 19 points.

NATHAN BALL added 9 points and 5 rebounds, while CHRIS MOYER was big on the boards, collecting 9 caroms to go with 6 points.

“We had kind of a letdown after coming off such an exciting game against Helix on Friday,” said West Hills assistant coach TIM BARRY. “We played better in the second half.”

For Valhalla MALIQUE SHAW hammered down 18 points, while RAMZI SULTAN rolled in 16 more.

KAI KOMAKI dropped in 11 for the Norsemen and TY SCHIMKE added 8.

West Hills improved to 2-1 in league play.

West Hills:  Cameron Barry 19 (4 reb, 3 ast, 1 stl), Marquell Cool 19 (6 reb, 2 ast), Nathan Ball 9 (5 reb, 1 ast), Chris Moyer 6 (9 reb, 3 ast, 1 blk).

Valhalla:  Malique Shaw 18, Ramzi Sultan 16, Kai Komaki 11, Ty Schimke 8.

 

SANTANA 61, EL CAJON VALLEY 39 – Santana made it look easy as NICK BERHALTER staked the Sultans to a 61-39 Grossmont Valley League victory.

Berhalter set the tone with 19 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and a steal.

BRANDON SIMMONS rolled a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Sultans.

ZACH LEGGITT popped in 8 points, while COLE KINCADE and SIMONE MARITANO each grabbed 6 rebounds.
