LA MESA (1-28-17) — The Helix Highlanders were almost caught off guard by league rival West Hills on Friday (Jan. 27) in a Grossmont Hills League game.
The score was tied at 29-29 at halftime but the Highlanders’ 6-foot-9 MILES NORRIS was saddled with 4 fouls and sat much of the first half until the third quarter.
DYLAN LEE was 7 for 7 on free throws and finished with 18 points for the Highlanders, which held on for a 69-65 home victory.
JAYLEN ARNOLD, in a physical outing, punched in 18 points, while Norris flexed his muscles down the stretch with 17 points.
CAMERON BARRY sank 5 three-pointers for a game high 27 points for West Hills.
“We were right there,” Wolf Pack assistant coach TIM BARRY said. “The key is they beat us on the glass.”
Despite the loss, CHRIS MOYER rolled a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds, while NATHAN BALL pitched in 12 points and MARQUELL COOL added 10 more for the Wolf Pack.

CHRISTIAN 68, CLAIREMONT 42 – The Christian High Patriots will maintain a second-round chase of the Coronado Islanders (22-2, 6-0).
The Patriots (14-8, 5-2) got a jump start with a victory over Clairemont in a key Central League contest before a home crowd Friday (Jan. 27).
Christian’s DOMANIC SAFARTA launched 4 three-pointers and NOAH MEEK knocked down 2 more treys.
NASHOM CARTER tossed in 11 points to go with 5 rebounds and 4 assists, while JACKSON LARSEN added 11 more.
DANIEL WELCH helped control the board for the Patriots with 16 boards and 3 blocked shots.
PATRICK ROBERTS pitched in 8 points and 9 rebounds to lead Christian’s supporting cast.
“It’s a big win,” said Patriots coach BRAD BRISTOL of the victory over Clairemont. “We are improving our inside play as we go along. Our inside play has really stepped up and done a great job to help us.
“Carter and Safarta led the way tonight.”

GROSSMONT 55, VALHALLA 46 – AUSTIN ODOM pitched in 4 three-pointers to finish with 20 points as Grossmont staved off Valhalla 55-46 in Friday’s (Jan. 27) Grossmont Hills League action.
Asked how they won the game, Foothillers coach FRANK FOGGIANO said, “We were methodical.”
JAMIE ODOM drove in 14 points, hitting a pair of 3s and gathering 5 rebounds, while HUNTER MULDER had a solid game with 11 points and 7 rebounds for Grossmont (10-11, 2-2).
Grossmont will play at Christian on Saturday (Jan. 28) at 8:30 p.m.

GRANITE HILLS 69, SANTANA 47 – Granite Hills’ pivot RYAN KELLY crashed the boards for 24 points and 8 rebounds to ignite the Eagles to a smooth victory over Santana on Friday (Jan. 27) in a Grossmont Valley League encounter.
MOSES SMITH poured in 14 points, while JORDEN ROGERS added 11 points.
XSAVIER SMITH chipped in with 9 points and 7 rebounds for Granite Hills.
Santana’s TC SIMMONS led the Sultans with 11 points, 7 rebounds and dished 3 assists, while NICK BERHALTER matched his scoring with 11 points.
COLE KINKADE punched in 10 points and grabbed 8 rebounds for the Sultans.

MOUNT MIGUEL 63, EL CAPITAN 32 – Mount Miguel maintains its tie with Granite Hills at 3-0 in Grossmont Valley League play.
On Friday (Jan. 27) the Matadors overcame El Capitan handily with a fistful of long-range shooting, leading 18-4 after the first quarter.
The Matadors’ JAMES ALLEN led the way with 14 points, 3 assists and 5 steals. He nailed 4 three-pointers in the process.
DARIAN NORWOOD turned a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds to go along with 5 steals.
Not to be overlooked was MARQUISE EDWARDS who grabbed 10 rebounds to go with 4 steals and 7 points.
“We came out strong,” said Matadors coach JAY ROWLETT, “and played really good pressure defense. It was a good team win.”
The game was poised to be an early-season showdown at home for the Vaqueros, who opened league play with three-straight wins, but their experience was no match for the Matadors from the get-go.

MONTE VISTA 64, EL CAJON VALLEY 29 – This game belonged to DEONDRE McHAYLE, who poured in 26 points to lead the Monarchs past the Braves in Friday’s (Jan. 27) Grossmont Valley League action.
He received excellent support from DAVID GARCIA, who pitched in 22 points behind him.
“The Braves give their best effort, but just could not make enough baskets to stay in the game,” said El Cajon Valley coach SCOTTY JAMES. “Monte Vista shot the ball well from the three-point line.”

ORANGE GLEN 61, FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 60 – The Patriots stunned the top-ranked Knights in Escondido, handing Foothills Christian its first Coastal League loss since Jan. 13, 2015 and only second league defeat since joining the circuit.
The Patriots led by five with three minutes to play.
With the loss, the Knights fell one game back of the Patriots, as well as, La Jolla Country Day.
The Knights’ T.J. LOWERY is lost for the season after breaking his foot in the contest, head coach BRAD LEAF said early Saturday.
