Eagles’ Collins has big impact in first game with OSU

CORVALLIS, Ore. (9-5-15) – Oregon State quarterback Seth Collins, from Granite Hills High School, has gone from late-comer to the OSU program to starting quarterback for the Beavers, as they prepare to play at famed Michigan Stadium on Saturday in the home debut of ballyhooed coach Jim Harbaugh in a nationally televised contest.
Collins rushed for 152 yards and threw two touchdown passes on Friday to lead the Beavers to a 26-7 victory over Weber State at Reser Stadium in the opening game of the season.
The first true freshman quarterback to start a game since David Moran in 1996, Collins threw the initial touchdown pass of his career, a 4-yard hookup with Victor Bolden, to give the Beavers a 13-0 lead with 6:47 remaining in the third quarter.
Then, after Weber State had drawn within 13-7 on an interception return, Collins led the Beavers to a field goal and a touchdown on their next two drives to clinch the win. He was the first quarterback to rush for 100 yards since Tim Alexander ran for 205 against Northern Illinois on Nov.16, 1996.
Collins also completed 10 of 18 passes for 92 yards and touchdowns to Bolden and Jordan Villamin. Villamin led the receivers with four catches for 70 yards, including a 44-yarder for a touchdown.
“Seth ran the ball a lot, he made some great throws and he seemed pretty poised for a freshman,” Andersen said. “He made some tremendous plays with his feet, which is what Seth it. It’s hard for a freshman to play in his first game but I think he handled it well.”
The Beavers return to action against Michigan in Ann Arbor on Saturday, Sept. 12. Kickoff is set for 9 a.m. at Michigan Stadium; the game will be televised by ABC.
