MONTE VISTA 54, SAN DIEGO JEWISH ACADEMY 44 – If there’s one sure thing in the Monte Vista basketball camp, it’s the complete performance of junior DEONDRE McHAYLE.

Once again McHayle produced 24 points as the Monarchs knocked off the San Diego Jewish Academy on Thursday (Dec. 28) in the Spartan Tournament in Chula Vista.

DAVID GARCIA and DERRICK WILEY each scored 12 points for the Monarchs.

Monte Vista:  Deondre McHayle 24, David Garcia 12, Derrick Wiley 14, Amir Conley 2, Gabrial Galvez 2.

RANCHO BERNARDO 64, HELIX 59 – Helix had one major problem in Wednesday’s (Dec. 28) Mt. Carmel Tournament action. The Highlanders couldn’t solve the serves of Rancho Bernardo’s 6-foot-5 JJ Overton, who is headed for Weber State.

“They had one dominant player and he dominated the game,” said Helix coach JOHN SINGER. “Overton scored 37 points – 23 in the first half and 14 in the second.”

Overton hit buzzer beaters at the end of the first half and at the end of the third quarter.

Fishburne led Steele Canyon with 12 markers. He had a clear look and a second shot with 3 seconds left.

Mt. Carmel got the rebound with 0.7 seconds left and the ball under the basket. They could have had a Hail Mary shot but they didn’t have to.

The Matadors were 13-for-20 at the free throw line.

“We have to find guys we can win with,” said Mount Miguel coach JAY ROWLETT. “We can’t have one guy that scores and one that plays defense. We need complete players. We’ll get it right.”

BUCKLEY (Sherman Oaks) 52, GRANITE HILLS 43 – The Eagles got a good solid 16 point scoring punch from JORDEN ROGERS and a solid job on the boards by MOSES SMITH, who collected 10 rebounds.

But it wasn’t enough to upend Buckley of Sherman Oaks in Wednesday’s (Dec. 28) Las Vegas Mtn. View Christian Tournament.

“Buckley is a pretty quick team,” said Granite Hills coach RANDY ANDERSON. “They have Shawn Wayans (son of actor Marlon Wayans) at the point. He can move the ball.”
