EL CAJON (12-29-16) — The Grossmont College Griffin women’s basketball team kicked off the 29th Annual Grossmont College Holiday Tournament on Wednesday (Dec. 28) with a 70-51 victory over the Victor Valley Rams at the Grossmont College Gym.
Four different Griffins (2-8) scored in double figures. SATON ROBERSON and KHIYA MOHAMED (coming off the bench) led the Green and Gold with 14 points each. While KYRA BRUESWITZ and BRITTANY GAFARE each chipped in 11 points.
Roberson scored nine of her points in the opening quarter, Mohamed scored six of hers also in the first. The Rams (3-12) outscored GC 24-17 mainly due to them shooting 64 percent, compared to the Griffins’ 41 percent.
“I’m really proud of the team,” head coach Karen Caires stated. “They really played together. We did a good job of execution tonight. There were a couple of times we wanted clock management and played that really well.”
However, that was the only quarter that the Griffins were outscored. The Griffins defense stepped up beginning in the second as the Rams shot only 29 percent. It only got worse for the Rams as they shot 25 percent in the third and less than 20 percent in the final 10 minutes. That would explain why the Rams only scored 15 points.
“We shared the ball well,” Caires continued referencing the Griffins’ 17 assists. “A lot of team play and locked up on defense.”
Grossmont will take on Santa Ana (10-5) in the championship semi-final at 7:00 p.m.
