SAN DIEGO (12-28-16) — When the Mount Miguel Matadors buzzed to a 17-1 first quarter lead over El Centro Southwest it appeared that they had the Montgomery Tournament game wrapped up Tuesday (Dec. 27).
“There’s no question, when you play defense like that, you’re gonna gain the upper hand,” said Matadors coach JAY ROWLETT as the Matadors finished 51-40 over El Centro Southwest.
“We played solid man and rotated on defense extremely well,” Rowlett added. “Any time you hold a team to one point, you’re proving you can play good D.”
DARIAN NORWOOD scored 20 points and grabbed 8 rebounds for the Matadors (5-7).
JAMES ALLEN pitched in 15 points, hauled down 6 rebound and made 5 steals.

MONTE VISTA 66, SAN DIEGO SOUTHWEST 56 – The Monte Vista Monarchs posted their 2nd win in three tournament starts as they toppled San Diego Southwest in Tuesday’s (Dec. 27) Spartan Tournament in Chula Vista.
DEONDRE McHAYLE poured in 36 points including 2 treys and 4 for 4 free throw shooting to continue to prove himself as one of the most prolific scorers in East County.
DAVID GARCIA tossed in 11 points for the Monarchs.
“Early morning games are tricky,” said Monte Vista coach MIKE TULLY. “We outscored them 25-7 in the fourth quarter. We need to build on the fact that we played hard in the fourth quarter. We need to figure out how to do that for four quarters.”

HELIX 49, TRABUCO HILLS 46 – Coach JOHN SINGER’s Highlanders (9-3) were led by DYLAN LEE’s 15 points and 10 more from JAYLEN HINSON in Tuesday’s (Dec. 27) Mt. Carmel Tournament game.
“We weren’t very good the whole game,” Singer said.
But good enough.

GROSSMONT 60, CLAIREMONT 32 – The Grossmont Foothillers bounced to a 17-5 first quarter lead and never looked back in Tuesday’s (Dec. 27) Spartan Tournament in Chula Vista.
“Our pressure was good, and we made free throws,” said Foothillers coach FRANK FOGGIANO. “We made 22 of 29 free throws.”
DOMONIQUE GUEVARA ripped off 13 points and 7 rebounds while HUNTER MULDER tossed in 11.

VALHALLA 73, HIGH TECH HIGH-CV 49 – The Norsemen outscored High Tech High-Chula Vista 23-9 in the third quarter and made it look easy after that in Tuesday’s (Dec. 27) Montgomery Tournament.
JONAH HOWARD led the Norsemen with 24 points, and MALIQUE SHAW pitched in with a double-double of 21 points and 23 rebounds.
KAI KOMAKI scored 10 points for the Norsemen.

ST. JOSEPH 80, GRANITE HILLS 40 – St. Joseph of Santa Maria buried Granite Hills with 14 three-pointers in Tuesday’s (Dec. 27) Las Vegas Mt. View Christian Tournament, and the game turned ugly after that.
Nobody scored in double digits for the Eagles in the encounter.

WEST TORRANCE 62, STEELE CANYON 51 – THOMAS FISHBURNE was on his game Tuesday (Dec. 27) as he poured in 22 points to lead the Cougars to a victory over West Torrance in the Mt. Carmel Holiday Hoops Classic.
“We’re small and don’t play hard enough to play big teams,” said Cougars coach DEREK STEPHENS. “We fight to get back into it and it’s never enough.”
“We were down 15-1 at one point and we had it in single digits at the end,” Stephens said. “We didn’t hit a 3-pointer until the fourth quarter and that didn’t help us. We just need to come out and play harder.”

FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 79, CALVERT HALL 63 – JAYLEN HANDS had 33 points and JORDAN VAN OMMERING had 18 points and 5 threes as the Knights rolled to victory Tuesday (Dec. 27) over the visitors from Maryland at the Under Armour Holiday Classic.
KALE BALDADO added 13 points for FCHS.
KALEB LOWERY, a freshman, had a field goal at the first-half buzzer to send the Knights into the locker room ahead 43-32.
Hands had 17 points in the first half and 21 points through three quarters.
T.J. LOWERY and Van Ommering buried threes in the first quarter as the Knights got out to a 21-12 lead at the end of one.
