SAN YSIDRO (12-24-16) – In the championship game of the San Ysidro Cougar Classic, the Valhalla Norsemen were ready, showing limited stages of fatigue.
That was a good sign because Valhalla needed every ounce of energy to prevail in a 65-63 win over Mission Bay to capture the tournament title.
“Every guy stepped it up and elevated their game,” noted Valhalla assistant coach SCOTT STURGEON of the nightcap championship contest. “This game was very physical. They came out and cranked up the pressure. We had 12 turnovers in the first quarter.
“MALIQUE SHAW was really big down low. He rolled a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds. He and RAMZI SULTAN really picked up the scoring for us. Sultan also spun a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
“EVAN O’NEILL hit his three 3s in the third quarter and that’s when we started taking the lead.”
The Norsemen lobbed 7 treys in the game – besides O’Neil’s 3, KAI KOMAKI had 2, TY SCHIMKE had one and Sultan added one more.
“We got the lead in the third quarter. Ty and Kai, as guards, handled the pressure really well. In the fourth quarter with three minutes left, Ty hit a huge three. They closed the lead down but we had enough of a lead to win it.
“Ty played one of his best defensive games ever,” Sturgeon continued. “He was just phenomenal. He took Mission Bay’s best player, Rejean Ellis, out of the game. Ellis was a great point guard and Ty just shut his game down.”
Valhalla vs. Mission Bay: Malique Shaw 18 (14 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl, 4 blk), Ramzi Sultan 16 (11 reb, 2 ast, 1 stl, 1 blk), Kai Komaki 9 (3 reb, 4 ast, 2 stl), Evan O’Neill 9 (2 reb), Ty Schimke 7 (3 reb, 3 ast, 2 stl), Jonah Howard 6 (3 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl).
VALHALLA 55, IMPERIAL 44 – The Valhalla Norsemen springboarded into the San Ysidro Cougar Classic finals by knocking off Imperial in a semifinal victory.
JONAH HOWARD paced the Norsemen with 16 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 4 steals and a block as they overcame the Imperial Tigers in Friday’s (Dec. 23) San Ysidro Cougar Classic semifinal game.
“Valhalla was up and down,” said Norsemen assistant coach SCOTT STURGEON. “We had some guys get in foul trouble. Jonah Howard used defense to score on offense. We never really got in the rhythm of the game. It was an early morning game.”
TY SCHIMKE scored 12 points, and MALIQUE SHAW snagged 13 rebounds and blocked 6 shots for Valhalla. EVAN O’NEIL hit a pair of treys.
Valhalla vs. Imperial: Jonah Howard 16 (4 reb, 2 ast, 4 stl, 1 blk), Ty Schimke 12 (2 reb, 3 ast, 2 stl), Malique Shaw 9 (13 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl, 6 blk), Ramzi Sultan 7 (8 reb, 2 ast, 1 stl, 2 blk), Evan O’Neil 6 (3 reb), Kai Komaki 5 (3 reb, 3 ast, 1 stl), Austin Pola (2 reb, 2 ast, 1 stl), Micah Campos (1 reb, 1 ast).
