SAN DIEGO (12-17-16) — Championships are all but expected on the Grossmont courts. But the Foothillers may have their hands full this year against the El Capitan Vaqueros.
However, the Foothillers were in full gear Saturday (Dec. 17) as they went head to head against the Vaqueros, coming out with the championship victory 51-39 of the San Dieguito Mustang Tournament.
“This championship game was redemption for us,” said Grossmont coach GRACE CAMPBELL. “We lost in the Mustang championship game last year, so this was a good win for us. It’s great to win a tournament but our ultimate goal is to win league and CIF.”
Grossmont got the lead in the first three quarters but El Capitan fought back in the fourth. The Vaqueros saw their record fall to 7-1 while Grossmont hiked its record to 7-0.
“Our next two tournaments are going to be a lot tougher in hopes to prepare us for that,” Campbell continued. “We beat El Cap this time but we see them two more times during league.”
ATHENA SOTELO led Grossmont with 17 points, CANDACE HENDERSON chipped in with 16, and TYANA WARSAW finished with a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Sotelo was named the Mustang Tournament Most Valuable Player.
MARIE COOK paced El Capitan with 16 points, while STEPHANIE ADAMS was big on the boards with 10 rebounds to go with 8 points.

HELIX 81, FRANCIS PARKER 34 – The Highlanders took off with a bang, leading Francis Parker 24-5 in the first quarter of Saturday’s (Dec. 17) Crawford Tournament game.
Four Highlanders scored in double digits.
DANIELLE SIMMONS paced Helix with a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds to go along with 2 assists, a steal and 2 blocks.
Scoring 16 points was TALIAH HOOKER, while CAM OWENS tossed in 11 points. OLIVIA MISSIOURIA contributed 12 markers.
The rest of the Highlanders created balanced scoring throughout the game.

Game 1: WINDWARD 56, WEST HILLS 19 – Perennial power Windward came close to shutting down West Hills in Saturday’s (Dec. 17) Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas.
“Windward is really good and we didn’t play well,” said West Hills coach RYAN KINSER.
None of the Wolf Pack players reached double figures.

Game 2: WEST HILLS 51, PHPW (New Zealand) 37 – In the second game of Saturday’s (Dec. 17) Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas the Wolf Pack rallied.
MAYA CLEMONS and VIVIAN PANELA shared the lead for the Pack with 13 points apiece.
CARLY RALEY popped in 11 points.
“The girls re-grouped from the morning game and played really well,” said Pack coach RYAN KINSER.
West Hills vs. PHPW: Vivian Panela 13, Maya Clemons 13, Carly Raley 11, Jessica Fondas-Ryan 8, Kerrie Daniels 6.
MAR VISTA 41, EL CAJON VALLEY 39 – Seems there’s no stopping the Braves’ sophomore LEANNA WATSON, who drilled in 9 of 18 shots from the field including a pair of treys, and 2 for 2 free throws for 26 points in Saturday’s (Dec. 17) Lady Lancer Invitational in Chula Vista.
Watson was named to the All-Tournament team for her efforts, as the Braves fell to the Mariners.
Three El Cajon Valley players – SUMAYA HAMEED, ERICA BAZILE and LILIAN AKINTONDE – grabbed 6 rebounds each.
El Cajon Valley: Leanna Watson 26 (9 reb, 3 ast, 4 stl), Sumaya Hameed 5 (6 reb, 2 ast, 3 stl), Erica Bazile 3 (6 reb), Shontell Williams 2 (1 reb, 1 ast), Lilian Akintonde 1 (6 reb, 1 ast, 4 stl), Rania Noori 2 (2 stl, 2 ast), Keariel Brewer (2 reb).
EL CAJON VALLEY 50, SOUTHWEST (SD) 10 – In an early, early morning contest, the Braves blitzed the Raiders behind 25 points from Watson and 17 points from Hameed.
Hameed also 20 rebounds, while Watson had 10 boards and four blocks.
GRANITE HILLS 46, MADISON 26 – The Eagles are building momentum with every game, as they proved against Madison in Saturday’s (Dec. 17) Crawford Tournament action.
ANYANG AGOTH paced the Eagles with 13 points, including 3 treys and CHASE ROBLES scored 10 points and hit 2 threes, while SHELBY RIPBERGER contributed 11 points.
KANI KUBARI was big on the boards with 12 rebounds and 3 blocks to go along with 8 points.
“We never trailed,” said Granite Hills coach CURTIS NORWOOD. “We started out well and maintained throughout the game. “It’s nice to be on the winning side. We’re righting the ship.”
“Our posts – Kubari, SHANICE LACY and MELISSA MENDOZA – were a force inside the paint,” the coach added.
