CHULA VISTA (12-17-16) — Dictionary.com defines the term Overmatched as “to be more than a match for; surpass; defeat” or “to match (a competitor) against another of superior strength, ability, or the like.”

The second definition would certainly describe the scheduled game between the Chula Vista Community Learning Center Cobras and the El Cajon Valley Lady Braves on Friday (Dec. 16) in the Lancer Holiday Tournament.  The final score of the “contest” was Lady Braves 58, Cobras 8.

LEANNA WATSON led all scorers with 22 points on 12-of-20 shooting from the field.  SUMAYA HAMEED also reached double figures with 12 points behind 6-of-9 shooting.

Hameed along with ROTANA TOBYA, VEAN GORGEES and ERICA BAZILE all had five rebounds apiece.

El Cajon Valley (2-1) jumped out to a big lead as the first quarter proceeded.  First it was a 10-0 run.  Then it was 20-0, a couple of possessions later, 30-0.  At the end of the quarter, 34-0.

When the second quarter began, the only question left to answer was when would the Cobras score?  The answer to that question was 4:23 remaining in the second quarter when they hit a 3-pointer.  At halftime, it was 42-6 El Cajon.

The Lady Braves put their starters back in to begin the second half.  That netted a 14-0 quarter.

With such a large margin the CIF rule of running clock when the score is out of hand was implemented.  With the running clock, both teams only scored a single bucket each.

“You have to,” is how coach CARLOS MOSS answered the question of did you use this as a practice?  “We only have two returning players from last year.  You have juniors that have never played before, so whenever we get a chance like this you have to take advantage of it.  Cause I want them ready for (Grossmont Valley) league.”

EL CAJON VALLEY Stats: Leanna Watson 22 (2 reb., 4 ast., 7 stl), Sumaya Hameed 12 (5 reb, 3 stl, 1 ast), Vean Gorgees 6 (5 reb, 1 stl), Lilian Akintonde 6 (4 reb, 4 stl), Erica Bazile 4 (5 reb), Rotana Tobya 2 (5 reb, 1stl), Keariel Brewer (2 reb, 3 stls), Rania Noori 2 (2 reb., 1 ast., 3 stl).

WEST HILLS 43, CLARK (Nev.) 3 — Points were scarce, to say the least, in Friday night’s (Dec. 16) girls basketball endeavor as West Hills clobbered Clark 43-3. That’s right – 3 in the final quarter of the Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas.

“We started off very slow, would like to blame it on the travel, but riding in a car for 6 hours doesn’t make you miss 2-footers,” said Wolf Pack coach RYAN KINSER. “We were more efficient in the second half.”

No doubt it could have been more lopsided than it was. But Clark did not score a single point until the fourth quarter.

CARLY RALEY led the Wolf Pack with 13 points and KERRIE DANIELS added 12 more.

“We didn’t play a tough team tonight unfortunately, but tomorrow – Saturday (Dec. 17) – we face Winward at 10:20 in the morning,” Kinser added.

The Pack will have their hands full in that game.

West Hills:  Carly Raley 13, Kerrie Daniels 12, Jessica Fondas-Ryan 7, Vivian Panela 4, Helena Keohane 2, Haley Doucette, Caitlyn Stayner 2.
