LAKESIDE (12-11-16) — Baseball pitchers are credited for twirling no-hitters and shut-outs.

The Vaqueros (5-0) weren’t that deadly but they had the ball spinning as they clobbered High Tech High-San Diego 60-8 in a non-league rout Saturday (Dec. 10).

El Capitan’s defense limited High Tech to 5 points in the first three quarters and 3 tag-a-long points in the fourth.

On the offensive end for the Vaqueros, STEPHANIE ADAMS drilled in 16 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.

GRACE BURKETT pitched in with 14 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals, while McKENZI KYGAR shoved in 10 points, grabbed 2 rebounds and recorded 5 steals.

MARIE COOK collected 7 assists, 4 steals and 6 points for El Capitan.

“Marie Cook is making the difference in our season,” said Vaqueros coach DARIN CURTIS. “Last year her role was to score points, her role has changed this year.

“This year she’s our most valuable player – she’s the quarterback of our team. We’re asking her to run the team for us. It’s really made a difference in our season. She’s getting the freshmen involved. This is the closest team that I have ever coached.”

El Capitan:  Stephanie Adams 16 (7 reb, 3 ast, 2 stl), Grace Burkett 14 (7 reb, 4 ast, 3 stl), McKenzi Kygar 10 (2 reb, 5 stl), Marie Cook 6 (2 reb, 7 ast, 4 stl), Danielle Pimentel 6 (2 reb, 3 ast, 3 stl), Jordan Grandy 4 (3 reb, 2 ast, 2 stl), Devon Bullock 2 (3 reb, 2 ast, 2 stl), Melissa Reyes 2 (1 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl).

MISSION HILLS 51, MOUNT MIGUEL 31 — The showdown between Top 10 powers Mission Hills and Mount Miguel dissolved in a hurry Saturday night (Dec. 10) in the championship game of the Matador Classic.

Mission Hills, ranked No. 1 in the county, took a 14-2 first quarter lead and led 14-7 at halftime as the Matadors stumbled to the gate, losing to the Grizzlies 51-31.

“We did not come ready to play,” said Matador coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL. “We got totally outclassed. We got punched in the mouth.

“Mission Hills was at the line with one second left (in the first half). She missed the free throw and they got the rebound and made a basket. That’s how bad it was. We don’t box out,” Sandoval said. “We got our butts whipped.

“As bad as we played, it still was only a 12-13 point game. We just got killed on the glass. Mission Hills out-rebounded us – we got killed on the glass and our offense was terrible.”

SATERA BATES muscled in 12 points, hitting a pair of treys and shot 2-2 from the free throw line.

NYSSA MAGA added 9 points, including a pair of threes.

On the boards the Matadors was limited to 28 rebounds, but Mission Hills controlled the offensive glass.

Even more biting was Mount Miguel turned the ball over 28 times.

“We got bullied tonight and that is not acceptable for a Lady Matador team,” declared Sandoval.
