IRVINE (12-10-16) – The Grossmont College women’s basketball team bounced back nicely against the Rio Hondo Roadrunners on Friday (Dec. 9) but ultimately fell 74-61 in the consolation championship semifinal at the Irvine Valley tournament.
COURTNEY BRANCH (Patrick Henry) led the way for the Griffins (1-8) with 17 points, nine rebounds and four steals.
SATORI ROBERSON (La Jolla) and BRITTANY GAFARE (Hilltop) added nine points apiece, with Gafare one rebound away from having double figures.
Four Roadrunners (4-6) had double figures in the game, led by Aliyah Montiel with her 19 points.
The Griffins scored the first basket of the game when Gafare scored a layup just four seconds into the game. After the Roadrunners scored on their own layup to tie the game just 30 seconds into the game, Roberson had her own layup to give the Griffins the lead at 4-2. That would be the last time they would lead in the game. The ‘Runners would go on to a 9-2 run over the next three minutes.
In the last 90 seconds of the first quarter, the Griffins went on a 6-1 run to show the score of 23-16 at the end of ten minutes of play.
By the halfway mark in the second quarter, Grossmont had trimmed the deficit to just three points (31-28 RH) with 4:46 remaining in the period. But RHCC would close out the frame with an 8-4 run to put it at 41-32 at intermission.
On the back side of halftime, both clubs had 6-0 runs, first Grossmont then Rio Hondo. To close out the quarter, the teams matched each other with 10 points apiece, for a 56-49 score.
The fourth quarter was close as with just 90 seconds to play Grossmont was down by just nine points at 70-61. But the Roadrunners closed out the game with four free throws, while the Griffins couldn’t make a basket.
The Green and Gold will now regroup and get ready for the 29th Annual Grossmont College Holiday Tournament (Dec. 28-30). Grossmont will open with Victor Valley in the final game of the opening round.
