Polished Barons take El Capitan’s gold

Bonita Vista gets yardage against El Capitan Friday night.

LAKESIDE ( 11-19-16) — A San Diego Section quarterfinal originally forecast as an entertaining Division II contest, got ugly in a hurry. The visiting Barons from Bonita Vista won the coin toss and elected to defer, a common trend these days. You could feel the excitement and assurance from the home crowd, their Vaqueros were going to take care of business.

Bonita Vista had an entirely different plan of attack: Force a quick three and out, silence the home crowd, and score on their first possession. That is exactly what the visiting Barons did, 6 plays, 70 yards, and a 6-yard strike to wide receiver Keenan Ellis from senior QB Anthony Posada, 7-0 with 7:33 left in the 1st quarter of play.

The Vaqueros, on their second possession put together their own recipe of RB CONNOR ROOSA ground assault and a couple of lasers from the young, impressive, freshman QB WICK HAUSER.

Carving up chunks of yardage and clock, the home squad was going to score. Unfortunately the Barons’ defense had different plans, causing Roosa to cough up the rock at the 10-yard line, recovered by Bonita Vista.

Four plays and a 78-yard bomb from Posada to the open arms of receiver Ellis for his second score on the evening, left the score 13-0 with 1:20 left in the first quarter.

Unfortunately for the Vaqueros, the Barons would score two more times leaving the score 27-0 Bonita Vista at intermission. Surprisingly enough the El Capitan stands remained full.

The Vaquero defense stepped up in the second half, limiting the Barons to 14 points, capped off by an interception by El Capitan outside linebacker RONNY MILLER.

The Vaqueros did engineer one last drive before time expired, and let the skunk out of the box.

With 24 seconds on a running clock, QB Hoaser lofted a perfect pass into the arms of WR KEVIN VON YOKES for a 15-yard strike to end the game, Bonita Vista moving on with the 41-6 win.

Hauser finished a hard fought night, 7-for-14 for 86 yards, with two interceptions and a touchdown pass.
