Matadors can’t repeat success in Poway

POWAY – The defenses were expected to be in force at Poway High Friday night, but a third party also made their presence felt when Mount Miguel faced the host Titans.

A myriad of penalties plagued Poway’s 24-6 win over the visiting Matadors, as the Titans made sure they didn’t let a lead slip away to Mount Miguel like last season’s meeting here.
Senior lineman DURAN MILLER recorded a pair of sacks in the first quarter for Mount Miguel. His first came on third down on the game’s opening series and forced a punt.
Miller’s second sack pushed the Titans back and limited the hosts to a 40-yard field goal to open the scoring.
ANTHONY GILMORE, a senior, had a 49-yard touchdown catch and run from quarterback Benny Valadez in the first quarter to close the early Poway lead to 10-7 with 3:30 left.
KIKO BORJA had a defended pass in both the first and fourth quarter for the Matadors, while JONATHAN MONROY had a first quarter on sack on third down to force a Poway punt.

Junior MARIO COKER had an interception inside the 10-yard line to stop a Poway drive in the second quarter. Miller also had a fumble recovery in the first half for Mount Miguel.
JOHNNY LEE and TAYLIN JOHNSON both had receptions for sizable gains late in the contest, as Mount Miguel was attempting a mild comeback.
Last season, the Titans held an early 21-0 lead over Mount Miguel before the Matadors made a tremendous comeback.
The Titans’ Jared Adelman returned a fumble 49 yards for a score in the fourth quarter.
Chris Butler had four catches for 110 yards, including a 46-yard touchdown reception for Poway. He also finished off a 16-play, 80-yard drive in the fourth quarter with a five-yard touchdown run.

The Matadors were at the Poway 2 late in the third quarter and poised to take the lead, but a penalty and an interception by Dustin Marvin stopped the potential scoring drive.
Poway (2-0) took a 10-0 lead when Robbie Sullivan threw a touchdown pass to Chris Butler for a 46-yard score with 4:47 to go in the second.
Poway’s Shane Gurule’s had 40-yard field goal with 1:58 left in the first quarter gave the Titans a 3-0 lead.
Poway’s Jacob Gaines recorded an interception in the end zone with just seconds remaining in the game.
