RANCHO SAN DIEGO (10-15-16) — The West Hills Wolf Pack rained on the Steele Canyon Cougars’ Homecoming parade on Friday (Oct. 14) in Spring Valley, 27-14.
About the only thing West Hills (5-2, 1-1 in the Grossmont Hills League) did wrong was miss an extra point.
The Pack jumped out to a 7-0 lead on their 3rd possession with 4 players doing the heavy lifting. JOVAN BEA started the drive with a 4-yard run and GRIFFIN GUINN followed with an 11-yard rumble.
Bea was back at it next with an 8-yard burst. Then from his own 48-yard line, quarterback HAYDEN ROACH decided he was missing out on the action and dialed up wideout RICKY WILSON on a 52-catch and run with 9:48 left in the 2nd quarter.
With Steele (2-5, 0-2 GHL) mounting a quality drive, a RYAN JEWELL interception would thwart the Cougars and lead to a 13-0 halftime lead.
They went on a 7-play drive with the usual suspects involved.
Guinn (18 rushes, 81 yards) had 2 short runs and a catch and Bea added 2 more runs before Roach (9-14, 163 yards, 4 TD’s) would get involved finding Bea on a 7-yard touchdown pass with 2:30 left in the half.
West Hills would also be the beneficiary of the second half kickoff.
Up 13-0 and starting from their own 30, they embarked on a 10 play drive chewing up over nearly half the quarter.
This time, JASON VILLASANA caught Roach’s eye for 22 yards and the drive ended with a 5 yard slip screen to CADE WEAVER on the far sideline to make it 20-0.
“We had our best game of the season,” said head coach CASEY ASH. “We played well on offense, defense and special teams.”
Steele Canyon would get off the mat to answer back on their second drive of the half.
Quarterback THOMAS FISHBURNE (27-47, 296 yards 2 TD) would spread the ball among 5 different receivers on the drive.
He found BRENDEN WILLIS (12 catches, 124 yards) for 7 yards and JACOB JONES for 15. He then hooked up with AMIR HARRIS for 18 yards. JORDAN ANDERSON was next up with a 23-yard reception. Finally, with 40 seconds left in the quarter, PERRY STEELE found paydirt from the 8-yard line. Steele was clawing its way back at 20-7.
But, Jewell happens.
He had his second pick of the night, eventually leading to the final score for West Hills. He wasn’t quite done yet. Two drives later from the Cougars 41, he got loose on the far side and Roach didn’t miss him.
“I was wrapped up,” he said. “But managed to break free and found the end zone.”
Jewell also added that he considers himself as an offensive player but was pressed into defense duty due to injuries.
A late score on a Fishburne to Willis connection closed the scoring at 27-14.
“We missed out on couple opportunities,” Steele Canyon head coach SCOTT LONGERBONE said. “But give them credit, they had a good game plan.”
