Griffins make big plays, blitz Canyons, 49-27

SANTA CLARITA (10-1-16) — After struggling out of the offensive gates a week ago, Grossmont College, scoring only 10 points in a loss to Chaffey, erupted for 517 yards as the Griffins rebounded Saturday (Oct. 1) to beat host College of the Canyons 49-27.

Freshman quarterback BRAD CAGLE completed 17 of 33 passes for 350 yards and 4 touchdowns as the Griffins improved to 4-1. That’s one more win than Grossmont posted last year at this time.

Led by sophomore receiver ADRIAN TOLBERT, who caught 9 passes for 140 yards and 3 touchdowns, Grossmont was dealing in big plays.

Cagle hooked up with Tolbert with a 69-yard scoring strike in the second quarter, which gave the Griffins a 14-7 lead early in the second quarter. The two also connected two more times for scoring hookups of 12 and 17 yards in the first half, which helped the Griffins take a 21-10 advantage.

JABRIL CLEWIS made a one-handed catch from Cagle and rambled 74 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter for the Griffins.

SPENCER MOYER came off the bench in the fourth quarter to click on 4 of 5 passes for 32 yards and one touchdown strike of 29 yards to QUINTAN VINZANT.

“It’s huge to bounce back like this,” said Grossmont coach MIKE JORDAN. “It’s tough to lose back-to-back games going into a bye (Oct. 8).”

Even the Griffins’ ground unit had steady footing with 135 yards on 31 carries. JEREMIAH BROWN set the pace with 42 yards and one touchdown on 7 carries.

KEITH FULTON chipped in with 36 yards and one touchdown on 11 carries. Cagle even joined the rushing parade with 39 yards on 9 carries.

“Our ability to run the ball better than we had been opened the door for some big plays for us,” Jordan noted.

On the defensive side, Grossmont surrendered 395 yards to the Cougars (1-3). Linebacker RYDEN KERR put the shoulder into the Griffin defense with 8 tackles, one for loss, and a fumble recovery.

Defensive lineman QUANTARIUS BOONE had 7 tackles, 3 for loss and 2 sacks. Defensive backs KURTIS BROOKS chalked up 5 tackles and JAMES JULIUS notched 4 stops, had a pass breakup and blocked a pass.

The Griffins totaled 7 sacks, including 2 by HUNTER CLARK who also had 2 tackles for loss. IKEY POUMELE had 3 tackles, one for loss, and one sack.

ELIJAH SIMMONS had 2 tackles, one for loss and a sack. GABE OILER also had 2 tackles, one for loss and a sack.

The Griffins punished Canyons on key downs with a dynamic blitz package.

“Our defense really came up big again. We had a lot of people involved in making big plays,” Jordan said.

Grossmont will draw a bye next week before traveling to state power Fullerton on Saturday (Oct. 15).
