SAN DIEGO – The Monte Vista Monarchs took full advantage of a depleted and undisciplined Crawford High team in the second half Friday afternoon for a dominant 23-0 win over the Colts in a game played at Hoover High.
After almost a full first half full of miscues and penalties on both sides, the Monarchs showed their momentum charge to win a field position battle which resulted in a safety in the final minute before intermission.
After a great punt play by the Monte Vista special teams pinned the Colts at their own 1, the Monarchs stopped a dive attempt by Crawford to get the ball out of danger, as CURTIS STEVENS and crew stood up the back and shoved him back in to the end zone.
Following a short discussion by the officials, the play was ruled a safety for a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Monte Vista’s JUNIOR PITOAU had an interception and 10-yard return in the second quarter, while Crawford’s Ali Musa had an interception just moments earlier.
JOSE GONAZLEZ had a tackle for loss in the first quarter for Monte Vista, while JAMEZ MCCLENDON had a sack in the second quarter.
Certainly credit goes to Monte Vista’s offensive front, led by senior DAVID YBARRA and junior YASER ZAFARI, which showed its dominance in the second half.
Monte Vista had two touchdowns called back because of penalties, one in each half.
The Colts came into the game with five of their starters, including standouts Santhar Sophan, Niko Perry and Tommy Thai. Crawford lost three more players during the game to injury.
