EL CAJON (8-31-15) — Good news for Grossmont High senior basketball player TOMMY RUTHERFORD. The 6-foot-10 standout has accepted a scholarship to the University of California at Irvine, effective in 2016.
Arguably one of the forces inside the paint, Rutherford also proved he could hit the outside shot, which no doubt attracted the Division I Anteaters’ coaching staff.
One scouting service said, “He’s a lunch pail performer in that you know what you’re gonna get.”
Rutherford averaged 24.4 points per game and 21.5 rebounds as a junior for the Foothillers.
Rutherford is a post prospect with long arms and good timing. He has advanced post skills (jump hooks with either hand) and a high motor (rim protector). He sprints the floor, shows good hands, and can attack the rim.
“He’s one of the top post players on the West Coast,” said another scout.
As a sophomore he poured in 22.5 ppg and garnered 19.5 rpg. He also reportedly had a scholarship offer from the University of San Diego.
