POWAY 43, MOUNT MIGUEL 19 – The Matadors knew the defensive game plan was to stop Poway’s super-durable back Jared Adelman, but it proved a near impossible task in Friday night’s (Sept. 2) contest in Spring Valley.

Adelman scored four touchdowns and rushed for 93 yards in the first half as the Titans’ quickly erased a Mount Miguel touchdown right out of the gate and pounded the Matadors on their home field.

The Matadors scored the game’s opening touchdown when RICHARD MOORE hauled in a long pass from quarterback BENNY VALADEZ good for a 49-yard score and a 7-0 lead just 1:42 into the game. Moore caught the perfect aerial just inside the 20 against buster coverage.

However, Poway would score 43-straight points before halftime.

Poway’s Robbie Sullivan completed a 20-yard pass to Noah Araujo for a TD, then later, Adelman had a 7-yard rushing TD to make it 15-7 Poway.

Chris Butler added a 36-yard defensive return when he stepped in front of a misdirection screen pass that was read perfectly by the defender for a 22-7 count.

Adelman’s second score of the half was a 2-yard rushing TD that made it Poway 28, Mount Miguel 7.

Then, with 3 minutes to go before intermission, he added a 17-yard rushing TD for a 35-7 advantage.

With just under a minute remaining in the first half, Tristan Hughes threw a 49-yard pass completion to Adelman for his fourth score of the half.

Valadez had a 21-yard TD run that closed the Titans’ lead to 43-13. Valadez had three interceptions and was sacked five times.

The Matadors also lost three fumbles.

SHEMAR GREENE had 107 yards on 16 carries for a bright spot for the Matadors.

Valadez had 90 yards rushing and 100 yards in the air.

Sean Miller had two sacks for Poway in the first half.

The win was Poway coach Damian Gonzalez’s 100th career victory at Poway. Ironically, he would have 101 wins with the Titans, but a previous win over the Matadors was later forfeited.

EL CAJON VALLEY 40, MONTGOMERY 0 – The Braves bolted to a 32-0 halftime lead and never looked back in Friday’s (Sept. 2) contest that hoisted the El Cajon Valley record to 2-0.

The game belonged to the defense. FAAMAMA LAUIFI recorded 15 tackles, linebacker OMAR GARCIA had 10 stops and DANIEL WILSON had 7 tackles.

ISSAC BLAKE played well in the offensive trenches.

“We looked pretty good tonight,” said Braves coach PARRIS PISIONA. “(Quarterback) TYSON SMITH played well. We’re getting better every week.”

Smith scored two touchdowns on runs of 70 and 30. He also hurled a 60-yard scoring pass to RAMUALDO MORALES.

The Braves’ scoring parade began on a first quarter as BRANDON ROBINSON scored on a 35-yard pass from Smith to give El Cajon Valley the early lead.

Sophomore GABRIEL HYDORN forced four fumbles and recovered three of them, not to mention making two tackles for loss, including a sack, as Mountain Empire’s defense stymied Army-Navy.

Sophomore DALLAS PRINCE scored on a 41-yard pass from Parra in the third quarter, as the Red Hawks led 13-0 after three quarters.

Sophomore CAMERON WILL, brother of the late Red Hawks’ star JAMES WILL, forced two fumbles and had two fumble recoveries, while senior MICHAEL STOGSDILL had an interception, which he returned for 30 yards.

CALVIN CHRISTIAN 38, FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 24 – Calvin turned a close game into a big lead in the second half, but the Knights’ junior STEVEN LEONCINI showed some second-half moxie at quarterback for FCHS in an 8-man Ocean League opener.

Calvin led 6-0 four minutes into the game, but the Knights would tie the score on a 45-yard TD run from CALEB TARVER just two minutes later. The score was 6-6 at halftime.

Calvin’s Matt Lafler had a 3-yard rushing TD to give his team a 12-6 lead with just over a minute left in the third quarter, a lead which they would extend to 22-6.

Tarver scored on an 85-yard touchdown run with nine minutes left in the game to make it 22-12, but Calvin answered right back one minute later with a score. A field goal and another touchdown extended Calvin’s lead to 38-12.

Leoncini threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to JOSH GATE with under a minute to play for six points, then the Knights got the ball back and scored again with the Leoncini-to-Gate combo from 32 yards out.

Leoncini also completed passes of 65 and 20 yards to GARRETT BANKHEAD and also threw a 35-yard completion to NICK PUPA in the second half.
