IMPERIAL – With a major scheduling disadvantage facing Grossmont College, the Griffins nearly blew any hopes of a PCAC championship, yet barely came through in the end.

Trailing all afternoon, the Griffins were down to their final out, but Nico Newhan bombed a go-ahead, 3-run homer in the ninth inning, when they scored four times to stun the Arabs, 9-7, at John A. “Buck” DePaoli Sports Complex, located east of El Centro.

An error and a ground ball out by pinch-hitter Colby Corlett trimmed the deficit to 7-6. However, the error also turned over the batting order.

Two batters later, Newhan clubbed a 3-run homer with two down. All the runs were unearned, yet Grossmont avoided a IVC curse.

In the history of the PCAC, no team that lost even one game in a season series to the Arabs has ever caputred the conference title.

Trevor Morgan registered the final four outs in relief to garner the victory.
