CHRISTIAN 3, MATER DEI CATHOLIC 1 – In a contest where runs would be hard to come by the Christian Patriots used three early runs to knock off the top team in the county Mater Dei Catholic to claim the Mater Dei Catholic Invitational Saturday afternoon.
In a hard fought contest between both squads the Christian Patriots behind an RBI single by Kaitlyn Moody (1-3, RBI) in the top of the first inning would lead 1-0.
A couple of innings later the Patriots would take advantage of some carelessness in the field by Mater Dei Catholic which ultimately led to two runs scoring making it 3-0 in favor of the Patriots.
Both Ashley Wood (3-4, R, 2 2B) and Lily Reyes would score on the fielding error which was started on a line drive to center field by Keels Carrizosa.
Alyssa McCurty who started for the Patriots would match inning for inning with Mater Dei Catholic starter Analesse Garcia recorded 21 outs in the contest. The only blemish on the day for McCurty was the one run given up in the bottom of the seventh inning which wasn’t earned on six hits while walking one and striking out one.
Lucy Sherburne would also have a hit in the game and score a run.
Christian with the win has now won seven games in a row and moves their overall record to 14-3-1. They also with the win snap Mater Dei Catholic’s six game winning streak.
CHRISTIAN 13, OTAY RANCH 8 – The Cardiac Patriots did it again. This time in the semi-finals of the Mater Dei Catholic Invitational the Christian Patriots stormed back from an early five run deficit to claim the early day contest Saturday.
In a contest that early on looked like it was going to be a convincing victory for Otay Ranch the Patriot bats would come alive and show that they had no quit in them.
Otay Ranch after trailing 1-0 thanks to Kaitlyn Moody (3-4, 3 RBI) who hit a sacrifice fly that would plate Lucy Sherburne (1-2, 4 R, RBI) would push across six runs in the bottom half of the first to lead 6-1.
The Patriots offense would respond in the top of the second inning with four runs to pull within 6-5. Starting the one out rally for the Patriots was Sherburne who singled in Sammy Baca (2-4, 3 R, RBI, HR) and would advance Alyssa McCurty (2-3, 2 R, 2 RBI, HR) who earlier walked, McCurty would come into score on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Krystek which cut the deficit in half, the next batter Ashley Wood (3-5, 5 RBI) would drive in both Pressly Villalva (1-2, 2 R) and Sherburne to make it a one run game.
Otay Ranch feeling the heat from the Patriots would push across a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to make it 8-5.
Christian after scoring two runs in the top of the fourth inning to pull within a run once again would finally take the lead in the top of the fifth inning.
Leadoff hitter Baca on a 1-0 county would tie the game with one swing of the bat as she belted a deep solo shot to center field. Later in the inning with two outs Wood would break the tie and help the Patriots retake the lead with a two run single scoring both Villalva and Sherburne to make it 10-8.
Christian would add to the lead in the top of the sixth inning thanks to McCurty who belted a two run home run over the center field fence making it 12-8.
Sienna Staite who had come into the game in relief would earn the win for the Patriots. On the day she surrendered one hit and zero runs over four innings, striking out one and walking one.
Christian has now won six straight ballgames.
POWAY 10, WEST HILLS 2 – Tough offensive day for the West Hills Wolf Pack as they could only muster a pair of runs as the Poway Titans used a barrage of early runs along with a five run sixth inning to claim the non-league victory Saturday.
West Hills early on would lead 1-0 thanks to Ava Goodman who with two outs drove in Kristina Deal.
Poway though would tie the game in the bottom of the first inning and score four runs over the second through fourth innings that included a Sophia Burmeister solo home run to take a 5-1 lead.
The only other run for the Wolf Pack came in the top of the fifth with two outs as Kiara Rabaya doubled in Reegan Veltre to make it 5-2.
Goodman who also drew the start for the Wolf Pack would be saddled with the loss as she gave up nine runs (six earned) on eleven hits over four innings in which she walked one and struck out three.
West Hills is now 7-3-1 overall on the season.
