2025 GROSSMONT COLLEGE BASEBALL
East County Sports.com
BALBOA PARK — The last time Grossmont College visited historic Morley Field, the bullpen received a letter grade of “F: — and they deserved it.
Holding a huge lead, the relievers of the Griffins counldn’t reguster a third out, as San Diego City College scored six times for an 8-7 victory.
Fortunately for Grossmont, the ballgame was a hastily-schedule, non-conference ballgame, pieced together that morning when a pair of ballclubs from Los Angeles didn’t want to risk spending precious funss should there be a rain postponement.
Now that Pacific Coast Athletic Conference action in underway, the bullpen is returning to form.
On Thursday (Mar. 20), Trevor Morgan fired 3.1 innings of shutout relief, capping a 15-3 romp.
Morgan struck out six Knights batters in registering the save for Griffins starter Joshua Swikard.
On offense, almost every member of the starting lineup contributed a hit, a run, and RBI or a combination of all three.
Third baseman Nico Newhan led the way with three RBI and scored twice, fueled by a double and a pair of walks.
The two-base hit in the seventh was interesting because the home plate umpire ruled catcher’s interfenrance on Newhan’s swing — but he hit the ball anyway.
The hard roller went through the infield and into left field, as the SDCC defense didn’t know what to do, yet the point was moot since the Griffins were already leasding 10-3.
Newhan also registered a fourth-inning dsacrifice fly (uncreditied by the SDCC scorekeeper in the boxscore).
Indeed, it was another long afternoon for the Knights (6-15 overall), whcih remain tied with Imperial Valley at the bottom of the OCAC standings with `-9 marks.
Grossmont (15-6, 7-2 PCAC) remains 1.5 games behind Paloamr.
The Griffins return home Friday for a non-conference, make-up contest with Citrus. Game time has been moved up to 1 p.m. at Noel Mickelson Field.
