FLETCHER HILLS — Two weeks ago, Grossmont College played what could arguably have been its poorest outing of the season in a 7-6 setback to Southwestern.
On Thursday (Mar. 20), the Griffins have a solid recovery.
Sophomore pitcher Gracie Johnston fired a complete-game, 4-hit shutout, while the defense played an almost perfect game, avenging their earlier loss to the Jaguars with a 2-o decision in Pacific Coast Athletic Conference action.
Johnston (4-5) allowed three walks for a total of seven SWC base-runners, but onlu one reached second base.
Grossmont (5-1 overall, 2-2 PCAC), which has won 2-of-4 to begin to straighten out its season, made life easier for Johnston by scoring twice in the first inning.
In fact, the ballgame was decided after just four batters.
With one down, second baseman Mariah Mata singled to center field, immediately scoring when center fielder Kate Manes lined an RBI double down the left-field line.
Moments later, clean-up batter Katelynne Parent, the third baseman, vlined a run-scoring basehit to center.
In addition, Griffins firstbaseman Trinity Mahoney added a pair of hits.
For Southwestern (5-16, 1-4 PCAC), freshman designated player Jules Lemen (Monte Vista( collected two of the Jags four hits.
