Griffins’ Ellis eraces Southwestern

FLETCHER HILLS – Grossmont College starting pitcher Ryan Ellis fired six inings of shutout ball, leading the Griffins to a 13-3 pasting of Southwestern in Tuesday’s (Mar. 4) Pacific Coast Athletic Conference ballgame at Noel Michelson Field.

Ellis, a sophomore out of Patrick Henry High, dominated by stricking out 10 Jaguars batters without a walk, yuelding just three basehits.

Grossmont’s offense backed Ellis with three runs in each of the first two innings, mounting an early 6-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Nico Newhan and Logan Aguilar each drove in two runs, while Jacob Embleton smacked a home run to back the Griffins’; 10-hit attack.

Before the second inning was completed, Grossmont chased a pair of southwestern pitchers, with another gone before the third frame was completed.

In the first, the locals loaded the bases, then scored twice on a wild pitches, followed by an intentional ground ball to the right side by designated hitter Noah Libed to knock home a third run.

In the second, two more runs came home on a ground ball and a wild pitch before the scoring was completed on an exclamation point on Embleton’s homer.

Southwestern’s seven pitchers finished with 5 wild pitches and hit 2 batters in 8 innings.

Aguilar, Grossmont lead–off batter, finished with a perfect outing at the plate. The shortstop went 4-for-4 and walked twice, scoring three times.

The victory left Grossmont (10-5 overall, 2-1 PCAC) a half-game behind front-running Palomar. The Comets contest with San Diego Mesa was suspended after two innings a(weather) and will be complete Wednesday.
