Newhan: 2 homers, 6 RBI, bounces Palomar

FLETCHER HILLS – Grossmont College third baseman Nico Newhan slugged a pair of home runs to take overt the state lead — including a grand slam — finishing with 6 RBI to power the Griffins to a 10-6 pasting of Palomar in Pacific Coast Athletic Conference action at Noel Mickelson Field on Saturday (Mar.1). BOXSCORE

Newhan batted 3-for-5 with 10 total bases, featuring with two homers to give him the 3C2A state lead with 9, plus a double.

Following a 2-run homer by Newhan for a 2-0 lead in the first inning, a long, long, long fourth, Palomar scored five times to take a 5-2 lead.

However, Grossmont responded by posting seven runs, with Newhan’s blast to center field being the go-ahead blast.

The huge rlly started on an RBI single by catcher Anthony Thomas, who advanced to second base on an error in right field by Paloma.

A hit batter, a strikeout and a walk later, Newhan;s blast gave Grossmont a 7-5 lead.

Newhan, a sophomore out of Granite hills HS, now owns a stellar 468 batting average, but an even more astounding, more-than-double .984 slugging percentage, whixh also leads California.

Following Newhan’s second hpmer on the day, the surge in offenser continued when center fielder Jacob Embleton lined a basehit, then Talon Tucker belted a 2-run home run over his post in right field.

On the mound, Trevor Morgan — Grossmont’s second pitcher — hurled four strong innings, allowing just one run to earn the victory.

Marland Jorgensen, although he did not gain a save since the ballclub held a 4-run lead, tossed a dominate ninth inning, striking out two of the three bComets atters he faced.

Grossmont (9-5 oveall, 1-1 PCAC) and Palomar (9-7) are tied for third place at 1-1. San Diego Mesa (oveer Imperial Valley) and Southwestern (over San Diego City) are both 2-0 after sweeping their PCAC-opening seies.

Next week’s 2-game, PCAC set finds Grossmont meeting Southwestern, hosting the Jaguars on Tuesday (Mar. 4), then battling at the field formerly known as Apache Hunction on Thursday (Mar. 7). Both start at 1 p.m.
