MORLEY FIELD – Last week, Grossmont College ended the attempt of top-ranked Saddleback to post the best start to the season in Southern California by downing the Bobats.
On Saturday (Feb. 15), the Griffins fell one inning short of matching the feat of 7-0 set by Antelope Valley College.
Host San Diedgo City College, in a game added earlierin the week due to th rains playing havoc with schedules, scored six times in the bottom of the ninth inning to shock Grossmont, 8-7. BOXSCORE
After the Knights scored five times, including a 2-run, game-inning hit by third baseman Daniel Tatis (a freshman from Florida), the Griffins believed they forced extra innings on an infield grounder. However, the throw for the force out was dropped for an game-winning, unearned run.
Trailing early 2-1, the Griffins took a 7-2 lead with four runs in the sixht, capped by a 3-run homer by the hot-hitting Nico Newhan. The third baseman batter 3-for-4 to raise his batting average to a sizzling .484 on the year.
