FLETCHER HILLS – Unbeknown to members of the Grossmont College women’s basketball team, while the Griffins were taking vare of district rival Cuyamaca, 108-53, the deadlock for second place among teams in the Pacific Coast Atletic Conference becme smaller.
PCAC leading Paloamr were again tested, yet the Comets remained unbeaten in the conference by dropping San Diego Mesa, 58-51, dropping the Olympians out of the logjam.
Thus, Grossmont (17-4 overall) remains even with Imperial Valley for second, with the Lady Arabs scheduled to visit the G-House on Wed., Feb. 12. Both schools stand at 6-2 in PCAC action; Mesa slips to 5-3.
Grossmont’s attempt to reach the CCCAA state playoffs received a boost Friday (Jan. 31) with a new face leading to the victory.Sophomore guard Mia Maglalang came off the bench to hit a team season-high 9 shots from beyond the arc, accounting for all of her career-high 27 points, as the Griffins posted 57 points in the first half.
Maglalang, who hails from Otay Ranch HS, nailed 9-of-18 shots , including a trio of bombs in the fourth period when Grossmont scored 30 points.
Meanwhile, Cuyamaca [layed feisty ball for three periods, despite playing short-handed due to injury, illness, jobs and other issues.
Still, the Coyotes, coming off a victory over Southwetsenr on Wednesdasy, played mostly even with Grossmont throughout most of the first quarter.
The improving Coyotes (7-11 o verall) received a team-best 15 points from Shania White, one of four players scoring in double figures.
The others included 11 points from
Laoren Jordan, the ballclub;s too performer on both ends of the court, plus 10 points each from Sierre Rose and
Catherine Jordan.
Following Maglalang in the scoring parade for Grossmont were Anayla Anderson (21 points), Kyla Palpallatoc (19) and Charlie Dagnid (11), plus a double-double by Kiya Waters (10 points, 11 rebounds).
Anderson also posted a double-double with 12 assists, along with Wilson (12 boards). BOXSCORE

The contest marker the first of Grossmont;s stretch of 6-out-of-7 games at home to close the season.
The next home game is Wednesday (Feb. 5) against MiraCosta,followed by the importswnt road contest in San Marcos against Palomar on Fri., Feb. 7, in a special, early 6 p.m. start.
Cuyamaca returns to action Wednesday, entertaining Imperil Valley.
Griffin Graffiti: In a private, post-game celebration in the locker room, Anderson celebrated her birthday early. She turns 19 on Sunday… The 108 points topped the previous season-best of 105 against Reedley College in December tournament action.
