Griffins women sweep; winless men shock Cuyamaca

KEARNY MESA – Following the most disappointing week of the season, the Grossmont College women’s basketball team bounced back to sweep a pair of ballgames last week, including a key battle at San Diego Mesa, 62-58, in Pascific Coast Athletic Conference action on Friday (Jan. 24).

The Griffins (15-4 overall, 4-2 PCAC) moved into a deadlock with the Olympians for third place, trailing nly preseason favorite Palomar andupstart Imperial Valley.

Trailing 52-51 in a ballgame which kept rocking back and forth, Grossmont guard Kyla Palpallatoc — the team’s leading scorer with 19 points — nailed a 3-point shot with 6″21 remaining.

Although the shot gave the Griffins the lead for keep. Mesa moved to within two points on six occasions, yet never was able to draw even inm the closing minutes.

Finally, Grossmont pulled away at 58-53 on a layin by Janae Wilson with 1:28 left.

Wilson, who was limited to 6 points and 6 rebounds, fought to gain inside position to collect an offensive rebound and score on a key, pit-back bucket for a 5-poiont advantage.

Grossmont initially took a 17-11 lead after the first quarter, but Mesa inches back to lead entering the forth quarter at 47-45. However, the Griffins took the final 10 minutes by a 17-11 margin for the victory.

For the Griffins, Anayla Anderson finished with 16 points and 9 assists.

For Messa, forward Kendal Alloway (Eastlake) was the lone starter in double figures with 25 points. Reserve sophomore center Alethze Marquez (Helix) grabbed 12 rebounds. BOXSCORE

Anderson was coming off a season-hgh 16-assist performance in another blowout of Southwestern.

The Jaguars, coming off the poorest season by any school in California last season — they once fell to Palolmar, 12-0 (as in zero) — played the mahority of the contest against the Griffins reserves.

Anderson also led the G-House with 22 points, but among the subs, India Pines (Manhattan Beach) posted a double-double with 14 points and 16 boards. BOXSCORE

CHULA VISTA – On Wednesday (Jan. 29), administrators at Cuyamaca College can mak a decision on whether to continueor disband its women’s basketball program when the Coyotes travel to the South Bay to battle Southwestern in a contest between winless PCAC programs. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.(*according to the CCCAA state website).

In Wednesday;s (Jan. 22) setback in Oceanside to MiraCosta at Crosswoods Gymnasium, Coyotes guard Yasmine Sharpe-Shropshire led with 18 points.

RANCHO SAN DIEGO – The hopeless season for the Grossmont College men’s basketball team made a sudden turn. Not only did the Griffins finally register their first victory of the season, they accomplished the feat againsttheir hated district rival.

On Wednesday (Jan. 22), Grossmont went to the Coyotes Den and pull off a shocking 63-61 triumph over host Cuyamaca. BOXSCORE

Grossmont guard Gavin Berg, who (Patrick Henry), who tallied a mere 17 total points over the first seven games of the season, continjues his rise. Berg collected a career-high 21 points to lead the victors.

Berg has now reached double figures scoring in six of his last seven outings.
