Scouts already love Griffins baseball

2025 GROSSMONT COLLEGE BASEBALL

ECS staff report

THE FIRST IN 2025: Grossmont College slugger M.J. Sweeney has signed with the Wichita State Shockers (NCAA Division I). MORE

COMPTON – There are baseball scouts, then there are “real” baseball scouts — and Grossmont College maintains its service to the community by playing in front of the best talent evaluators in the country.

On Friday (Jan. 25), the Griffins again oipened the season at the Major League BaseballDevelopment Complex, where they whipped the Compton College Tartars, 17-4, in the season opener for both ballclubs.

More than a half-dozen professional scouts were in attendance (far superior than local “bird dog” scouts which simply offer advice).

The Griffins pounded 24 hits — better than any game from last season — led by leadoff batter Noah Libed.

A left-handed hitting lead-off batter, Libed led by batting 4-for-5 with a walk, good for two runs and a pair of RBI.

The clean-up position already seems to be in lock-down, as left fielder Jacob Embleton drove in four runs, while first baseman M.J. Sweeney (St. Augsutine) and third baseman Colby Corlett (Clairemont) each knocked in three runs.

Sweeney, Grossmont’s power0hitting leader from last season, also joined Jacob Embleton with home runs.

In total, 7 different Griffins registered multiple-hit outings, including four with multi-RBI performances. BOXSCORE

The Griffins home opener is Tuesday (Jan. 28) against Mt. San Jacinto ay 1 p.m.
