2024-25 EAST COUNTY PREP GIRLS SOCCER
ECS staff report
EL CAJON – Some suspected the Kearny Komets might be a contender in the San Diego City Conference’s City League after easily downing Madison, 2-1, in their league opener.
So when the preseason favorite Christian Patriots hosted Kearny on Wednesday (Jan. 22), there was some nervous anticipation.
However, following a quarter-hour of scoreless play, the Patriots busted loose.
Junior forward Rebecca Wharton and sophomore midfielder Chloe Kiti tallied two goals each, as the Patriots waltzed to an 8-1 triumph.
The decision left Christian un a deadlock with Canyon Hills for the City League lead.
Once the Pats broke through in the 16th minute, the goal came easily with spot-shots in the 21st, 28th and 37th minute.
But when the hosts also scored late in the 50th minuter for a 5-0 halftime ead, even the referee didn’t wait for the midfueld kickoff and whistled for the intermission.
Also scoring for Christian were Lyla Day, Brinkley Whitt and the Cena sisters — Kayla and Madison.
Kearny registered a late goal when Patriots players were intentionally playing out of position, as the Komets No. 11 (no team roster was supplied) scored.
The sa,e eplayed wasd red-cardin the 71st minute.
The Komets forward was taken down on a late tackle, with the Christian player immediately drawing a yellow card.
However, the Komets player used a “coloful metaphor” at the Christian player, yet with the yellow card being shown for the tackle, the player then cursed out the referee to draw the red.
Christian, which later whipper Madison, 4-1, on Friday (Jan. 24), is now 6-5-3overall this season (3-1-1 City).
The Patriots con cap their season-long 7-game home standnext week, hosting Mira Mesa and San Diego-High Tech before going to Canyon Hills for the first-place showdown on Feb. 5, starting at 6 p.m.
