Friday’s Girls Hoops: El Cap rallies

El Capitan 57, Helix 54

LA MESA – Trailing 49-41 in the ourth period, El Capitan closed on a 16-5 scoring run to shock host Helix, 57-54, in Friday’s (Jan. 17) Grossmont Hills League girls basketball game at Caledonia Gymnasium

The acoring streak included 9 consecutive points to knot the contest at 49-all,, then 4 more to grab a 53-39 advantage.

West Hills 33, at ECVHS 25

EL CAJON – The West Hills Wolf Pack went to their most experienced payer to pull out a victory.

Four-year shooting guard Jordan Dillon poured in 15 points, allowing the Pack to claim a defensive struggle with El Cajon Valley, 33-25.

The Friday (Jan. 17) victory snapped the tie for first place in the Grossmont Valley League between the ballclubs.

Dillon, who scored 32 points in games earlier this season == against Hoover and Santa Fe Christian — actually finished with her third-lowest effort on offense this season. However, the senior did her part n defense to keep the Braves’ frontline off the scoreboard.

Another key was limiting second-chance opportunities by ECVHS, as Wolf Pack center Amber Froehlich grabbed 14 of her game-best 17 rebounds on the defensive board. Also reaching double figures was Jordan Dillon with 10 biards. Both are also seniors.

Another Wolf Pack member of the Class of ’25 was guard Tarantino Piniero, who led the team in assists.

West Hills moved to 11-6 overall (2-0 GBL); El Cajon Valley slipped to 9-5 (1-1 GVL).

Christian 80, Point Loma 9

EL CAJON – Once upon a time, Point Loma was not only the best in the CIF San Diego Section, they were one of the best teams in the country thanks to the remarkable Terri Mann, the state player of the year and an all-America selection.

For now, all the Pointers can do is observe the banners in their gym after host Christian handed a City League blowout decisio, 80-9, inFriday’s (Jan. 17) at Ryan Center.

The first-place Patriots move to 3-0 in the City League (13-4 overall), winning their seventh straight.

In allowing just 9 points, the total is the lowest yielded by the Patriots this century. It’s also believed to be the school’s best defensive effort since Christian entered the Grossmont Confereence for its single season in 1979-80.

Prior records,when Christian was a member of the Southern Conference, are not available.

The revious low was 10 points, set five times.

Mount Miguel 46, Monte Vista 29

SPRING VALLEY – Senior guard Laylah Castro was one of three Mount Miguel Matadors to score in double figures, finishing with a game-high 12 points to down visiting Monte Vista, 46-29.

Castro was joined by teammates Aivanna Sinsay and Rihanna Broughton, whom each added 11 points,

Mount Miguel moves to 3-16 overall (1-1 GVL); Monte Vista is now at 2-14 (0-2 GVL).
