RANCHO SAN DIEGO – The possibility for a rare quadruple-double existed, but Grossmont College forward Janea Wilson settled for a stellar triple-double in pacing the Griffins to a 107-48 throttling of cross-town rival Cuyamaca College in Wednesday’s (Jan. 8) Pacific Coast Athletic Conference opener at the Coyotes gymnasium.

Wilson, a product out of Steele Canyon, finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds — not unusual for a front-line player. However, the sophomore also posted 12 steals in overwhelming the Cuyamaca forwards.

Meanwhile, freshman guard Kyla Palpallatoc (Morse) led all scorers with 25 points.

A pair of Griffins — Charlie Dagnino (Palo Verde Valley) and Kiya Waters (Beaumont, Texas) — each added 19 points.

Dagnino gained her point on a series of a half-dozen 3-point goals. Waters also added 8 rebounds.

Grossmont (12-2 overall, 1-0 PCAC) caps the road trup at MiraCosta College in Oceanside on Friday at 6 p.m.

Cuyamaca (6-6 overall, 0-1 PCAC) has now dropped four straight, allowing 100 or more points on three occasions. On Friday, the Coyotes are at Imperial Valley, starting at 7 p.m.

Quad History

For a few additional assists,Wilson had the opportunity to became the second PCAC player to post a quadruple-double.

The feat was accomplished just once, when former Grossmont College point guard Brigayle Iglehart in 2005-06. Her milestone accomplishment came at home against Southwestern on Jan. 18, 2006.

Iglehart, a product from University City, went on to play on scholarship at CSU Dominguez Hills, the same school that former San Diego Mesa forward Deidra Johnson attended following an all-state, second team citation in the early 1980s.

Withh the Toros, Johnson set a school scoring record by pouring home 41 points against eventualy NCAA Division II national champion Cal Poly Pomona.

There was also a second reported quadruple-double by a Palomar player, but the accomplishment from 1985 has since been rescinded.
