RANCHO SAN DIEGO – Des[ite a difficult schedule in the preseason, the Helix Highlanders moved above the .500 plateau following Friday’s (Jan. 3) blanking of hist Valhalla, 3-0.
The Scotties (4-3-1 overall) opened the scoring in the closing moments of the first half, when Isabella Suplee beat the Norsemen defense to a loose ball and slammed it home in the 39th minute.
In the second half, Vivian Montague posted the second goal on a fed from Ava Cavazos as the Helix midfiel;d continued tocontrol the contest.
Finally in the 80th minute, Zoey Cameron, who was recently recalled from the JV squad, netter her first varsity gial in the 80th minute.
The shutout was shared by Aly Albert (first half) and Aubrey Laue (second half), with Laue making a nic, diving save in the 6y7tth minute to preserve the cleansheet.
Valhalla fell to break-even at 4-4-2.
Helix next plays at Otay Ranch on Monday at 6 p.m.
Monte Vista 1, Otay Ranch 1, tie
SPRING VALLEY – The biggest surprise from Friday (Jan. 4), sawthe struggling Monte Vista Monarchs posy their best outing of the season, gaining a draw against undefeated Otay Ranch.
The Mustangs (5-0-3) might have been looking ahead to Monday’s match with Helix, so Monte Vista took full advantage by carrying play for the slight majority of the contest.
Monte Vista (1-3-2) the game-tying goal from junior striker Marely Velazquez, It was ger fifth goal of the season, moving to within two goals of her season total over all of 2023-24.
The assist went to freshman Valeria Cardona, her first point over a pair of varsity starts.

RANCHO BERNARDO – The RB Broncos were awarded a questionable penalty kick in the 79 minute, making good for their second goal of the second half to tip visitint El Capitan.
The Vaqueros 3-4-0) saw Karleigh Torres tally an unassisted goal in the 11th minute. This was the first of a 4-game roadtrip for El Cap.

Patrick Henry 3, Eastlake 2
DEL CERRO – A pair of Patrick Henry seniors ed the way after Kathryn Mokhov scored a twp goals and Naima Castro added another in the Patriots conquest of visitin Eastlake.
Mokhov also assisted on the Castro goal, giving her five points for the contest.
Following a 5-gane winless streak, the Patriots (6-4-1) have now captured two straight heading into Friday’s (Jan.10) Western League opener against Our Lady of Peace, starting at 6p.m.
The sides have already met twice this season in tournament action, but the games were far different except for the results: the Pilots 1-0 and 6-3-0.
