CYPRESS – The Cypress Charters, hoss of the oldest community college women’s basketball tournament in California, nearly made a huge scheduling mistake for their 46th annual event.

The Chargers announced their first-round opponent would be Grossmont, showing disrespect to the Griffins. It almost cost them.

Grossmont led 42-40 through three periods before Cypress escaped on some late foul shots to win 60-53 to advcance to the winner’s bracket semifinals.

Meanwhile, the rising Griffins came back on Saturday (Dec. 7) tio whip Reedley College (formerly Kings River College), 105-55 to gain a berth in Sunday’s consoaltion finale.

Grossmont (7-2) tallied 44 points in the opening period, led 55-18 lead by the half, then reached a school-record 86 points through three periods to “86” th Tigers.

Janea Wilsonpaced the Griffins with 24 points, Anayla Anderson added 19, while Kiya Waters came odd the bench to score 14.

Grossmont will take on the Merced Blue Devils in Sunday’s final tournament contest.

Sunday Update: Grossmont College (8-4_ capued the consolation championship of the 47th annual Cypress College Tournament by stopping the Merced College Blue Devils, 74-60.

The Griffins posted their most balanced scoring attack of the season, with five players scoring in double figures.

Kyla Palpallatoc led the way with 18 points, while three others — Anayla Anderson, Charlie Dagnino and Kiya Waters — each added 12 points each. Janea Wilson had 11. BOXSCORE

Cuyamaca College

RANCHO SAN DIEGO – Cuyamaca College (3-2 overall) droped it only reported ballgame of the week, falling to visiting Saddlebacj, 74-70, on Tuesday (Dec. 3).

The Coyotes game on Fridat at home to Compton was not reported.

The 4-gamehomestand endon Wedesday (Dec. 11) with the Pacific Cosst Athletic Conference opener against Southwestern at 5 p.m.

SOuthwestern is thr school that had its women’s soccer team substitute for the basketball team in conference play last season, once falling to Palomar by a state-record score of 120-0 (zero).

Men’s Basketball

Cuyamaca College
SANTA ANA – Cuyamaca College dropped its one contestr of the week, falling to host Santa Ana, 76-63, Wednesday (Dec. 4) at historic (old) Bill Cook Gymnasium.

The Coyotes (6-3 overall) are not 6-0 against teams with losing record, but 0-3 against those above the .500 mark.

Cuyamaca returns home on Friday (Dec. 13) by entertaining Cypress at 5 p.m.

Grossmont College

FLETCHER HILLS – Text message and emails to East County Sports have long complained about a fomer Grossmont College director of athletics.

All we know (and can post without being sued) is, this AD’s former team in the Griffins is now 0-9 so far this season, while this ADs curent squad at Rio Hondo College of Whittier is now 0-11, leaving them as Southern California’s final remainig winless teams in men’s basketball.

Grossmont fell behinf the 8-ball by falling to Copper Mountain College of Joshua Tree, 73-65, on Saturday (Dec. 7).
