ECS staff report
CHULA VISTA – Six quarterback sacks and plenty of plays allowing nrgative yardage were just a few of the highlights for the El Capitan defense, allowing the Vaqueros to capture the CIF San Diego Secion Divion 4 championship by stopping Westview, 17-14, in Friday (Nov. 29) afternoon’s title game at Southwestern College’s Devore Stadium.
The defensive struggle saw a 14-all deadlock snapped o as Brayden Ford booted a 26-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter for the deciding points.
El Capitan (10-3 overall), with its ninth consectuvie victory, advance to the CIF Southland regionals. Next weekend’s game will be announced on Sunday (Dec. 1).
The trip to the regionals will be the first for E; Cap since 2014, when the Vaqueros wentr 14-0 before falling in the title game to Moraga-Camplindio, 35-28.
Long regarded as a ballcub with adynamic offenses, injuries on offesne again forced the defensive to lead the way. After posting threee shutouts and allowing a mere 61 points during the first 8 games of the win streak, the Wolverines scored just one touchdown in each galf to rally from 7-point deficits.
However, following Ford’s go-ahead field goal to make up for an earlier miss, the defense shut down Westview the rest of the way in the first-ever meeting between the schools.
El Cap was the division’s second seed; Westview (6-9), seeded fifth, downed No.12 Calexico, No. 4 Mission Bay, and No. 8 Montgomery to reach the final.
A pair of rushing touchdowns would make sure El Capitan never trailed.
Brody Coop ran up the middle from 1-yard out for the initial 7-0 just 2:43 into the contest.
When the Wolverines got even on a 50-tard bomb, Garrett Luckinbill ran off the right tackle for a 5-yard TD flr a 14-7 halftime advantage.
Westview again pulled even early into the second hlaf before Ford’s kick turnfd out to be the game-winning margn.
Meanwhile, the Vaqueros defense stood out down the stretch.
Official El Cap statistics were not available at press time, but the San Diego Union-Tribune reports the Vaqueros limited Westview to 32 rushing yards on 33 attempts. On 15 plays, Wesyview had 0 or minus-yards.
At the heart of the ‘D’ was linebacker Evn Garcia. The senior posted two tackles for losses, inckluding a sack.
Om the fourth quarter, Garcia was credited with five stops — four on the final two drivs — to prevent a late Westvuiew comeback.
The El Cap secondary stopped Westview on just 78 passing yards, of hich 50 came on one play late in the firdt period.
Westview had one last gasp to rally, but the Vaqueros’ Tyler Easley intercepted a pass in the closin seconds to cinch the triumph.
Copp and Michael Valencia were the replacements for Brady Joralemon, the ballclub;s leqadingf rusher, and Luckinbill, who came off with an ankle injury.
The collection still rushed 38 times for 1-9 uards. The receptions leader was Ayden Banegas, who gained 90 yards on seven catches (SDUT stats).
El Ca[itan head coach Ron Burner now owns a 121-101-2 career record in 20 seasons, including a 34-14 since the shortened pandeic season.
