FLETCHER HILLS – For the second consecutive week, the 16th-ranked Fullerton College Hornets captured another National Conference Southern Division contest by shutout.

Following last week’s 35-0 blitzing of Palomar, the Hornets returned to San Diego County took down the Grossmont College Griffins, 44-0, Saturday (Nov. 2) at Mashin-Roth Memorial Field.

For Grossmont (1-7 overall, 0-5 NCSD), they gained just 117 total yards and earned three first downs (plus a pair of penalty). However, the Griffins did not throw an interception for the first tie all season.

On defense, Grossmont’s Ezekiel Battle posted a 23-yard runback of an interception, while Joshua Collins posted two tackles for losses.

Fullerton  (5-3, 3-2 NCSD) scored 24 points in the first quarter, mounting a 38-0 halftime lead before calling off the dogs.

Fullerton’s View

Note: When Grossmont opened its current campus and started athletics in 1962, one of the first games was against Fullerton. It was also a shutout win for the Hornets, but more interestingly: the game was televised on KCOP Chl. 13 as part of the JC Football Game of the Week series… The original branding of KCOP means Copley Press, the station;s former owners, which also once owned the San Diego Union-Tribune.

MENIFEE – Mt. San Jacinto College was involved in another football game which went down to a fial-minute onsides kick, yet somehow survived.

Palomar College scored with 1:23 remaining to move within seven posts, then recovered the bouncy football near midfield.

However, the host Eagles  by safety Greg Jackson in the 5-yard line to gain a 36-29 victory in National Conference Southern Division action at Menifee Community Stadium on Saturday (Nov. 2)

Trailing throughout, the Comets pposted 15 points in the final period, capped by a 16-yard touchdown pass from K.J. Chatman to Elijah Hudson.

Chatman then rushed for a 2-point conversion, which was risky because a miss would’ve left the Comets with a 9-point deficit and no chance of winning.

Instead, Palomar recovered th esquibe  kick (name not isted in the stats), then drove to the Eagles-19 with just over a minute to play. However, ,a third-down pass was picked off instead of throwing the ball away with one more down remaining and plenty of time left on the clock.
