Cuyamaca hoops win debut in Double-O.T.

SANTA CLARITA – Last season, the Cuyamaca College men’s basketball team snapped a 14-year drought by finally winning its season opener.

On Friday, the Coyotes came through in the season lid-lifter for the second straight season; the first since the school won three straight openers in 2008-10.

Despite blowing a 19-point halftime lead of 40-21, Barstow gained the potential game-winning shot  at the end of regulation time and the first overtime, yet Cuyamaca survived to nip the Vikings, 72-20 in double overtime, in the opening round of the College of the Canyons Tournament.

The Coyotes will face the host Cougars in Saturday’s (Nov. 2) championship round after COC blitzed Oxnard, 84-77

Cuyamaca held a 40-21 lead at the intermission, but Barstow trummed the lead at a point-per-minute basis, finally getting even at 60-60 with just undert a minute to play.

The Coyotes missed their shot,leaving Barstow with 22.7 secdonds to take its first lead of the contest. However, a wide-open center dropped the ball for a turnover instead of a dunk.

In the furst ivertime, a Vikings’ 3-point attempt with 5.7 second was blocked by Coyotes freshman Quintin Richardson (CV-Calvary Christian)
, but a Coyotes forced shot to beat the buzzer by Nico Cervantes (Oyat Ranch) missed.

In the second extra session, Barstow took a 4-point lead for the first time at 69-64. but Cuyamaca answered when Jamarion Sykes (Lincoln) nailed a triple, then Richardson scored from inside the paint with 2:05 remaining.

Barstow hit a pair of fouk shots to re-gain the lead, but Cuyamaca shutout the Vikings over the final 1:44 to win.

Sykes, the leading scorer with 23 points, drove the lane for a layin, then freshman Kenneth Klu (Patrick Henry) added a ful shot with 14 seconds left.

Barstow’s arremot ti force a third OT so them miss another shot inside the paint. Although the Vikings grabbed the rebound — they dominated on the boards all contest, 53-28 — the putback was thwarted when the clock ran out.

For Cuyamaca (1-0), Cervantes added 20 points, while frosh Derek McBride (Patrick Henry) added 10 points.

Barstow (0-1) saw center Kalen Cobb score 14 points and grab 18 rebounds. The leading scorers for the Vikings were Danard Hollingsworth (19) and Brian Shannon (18).

Note: Cuyamaca’s previous multiple win-streak in openevr came Nov. 7, 2009, defeating Cypress, 68-66, at the COyotes Tip-Off Classic.
