Mesa survives onside kicks, edge Mt. SJC

MENIFEE – San Diego Mesa College has leaped high ijnto the CCCAA state rankings with several come-from-behind victories. On Saturday (Oct. 26), the Olympians needed to do the opposite.

Mt. San Jacinto College scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to move within striking distance, but Mesa recovered the onsides kickoff with 27 seconds remaing to preserve a 35-28 decision oiver the Eagles Menifee Community Stadium.

The triumph keeps Mesa (6-1 overall) in a second place deadlock with Saddleback in the National Conference Southern Division standings at 3-1. Meanwhile, MtSJC (4-3 overall) falls into a large grouping in fourth place at 2-2.

After trading earlyt rouchdowns, the Olympians led 21-7 tafter the first period and led the rest of the way. But they certaining didn’t expect such a rally by the Eagles.

Down 35-14, Mt. San Jacinto mounted an 81-yard scoring drive, capped by a 46-yard TD pass from Logan Gonzalezto Donte Sams with 1:52 remaining.

The first Eagles onside kick was recovered by Crispin Wong (Linfield Christian), giving the hosts 86 secopnds to again scre.

Gonzalez then found Koa Apana on a 3-yard pass. Thus, another onside kick was in order for a miracle finish.

However, Mesa’s Keshun Ford, a frosh defensive back out of Lincoln, grabbed the just 8 yards from the boot, covering the ball before the Eagles could legally touch it.

Early on

Mt. San Jacinto had early control, but its initial drive was stopped by Mesa defender Jayden Cortell, who raced 88 yardd after a fumble recovery.

Gonzalez followed with the first of his three TD passes, which finsihed off a 92-yard drive after they gooded on the kickoff.

Mesa quarterback ax Leatherwood. answered with a pair of TD throws — to Dazure Pagget (11 yards) and Jalil Tucker (40) — for a 21-7 lead.

Tucker (4 receptions, 133 yhards) opened the second half with his third TD on Leatherwood’s fourth TD pass, covering 64 yard for a 35-14 lead.

On defense for Mesa, John Shepard and Brandon Worlsey led withh 7 tackles. Shepard also posted an interception and forced an Eagles fumble.
