SAN MARCOS- Crawford Colts defensive back Khalid Ali equalled an all-time national high school reord that can never be broken, but the game’s standout was Patrick Henry running back Cody Cappelletti on the Patriots’ 44-14 triumph in Friday’s (Oct. 18) City League contestr.
In the decisive second quarter, Patrick Henry intercvepted a pass to gain possession insde the Colts’ red zone.
However, Ali stepped in front of a pass in his own end zone, racing the length of the field to move his side to within 10-8.
The 100-yard runback for as tocuhdown is the 22nd listed time in CIF-San Diego Section history. And since yardage in the end zone does not count inamateur football, the record can never be broken.
The Patriots then reverse strategy and handed the ball to Cappelletti, who went over the 1,000-yard mark for the season.
The senior, all-purpose performer — Cappelletti also starts at linebacker and is the club’s leasding tackler — rushed for a pair of touchdowns in the quarter to give Patrick Henry a 24-8 halftime advantage on homecoming night.
Early on, Damien Carmichael gave the Patriots an early lead with a rushing touchdown. Matthew Montegna followed by kicking the extra point, then added a 29-yard field goal for a 10-0 advantage.
The Patriots (6-3 overall, 2-1 City) has a bye next weekend, then host San Diego to cap the regular season on Nov. 2.
Crawford falls to 3-5 overall (0-3 league). The Colts close with home games against Morse and Hoover.
